“I Was Going To Vomit”: DC’s New Supergirl Actress Milly Alcock Recalls The Casting Process And What The Screen Test Was Like

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow star Milly Alcock looks back at the casting process and screen test she did before landing the role of Kara Zor-El in the DC Universe. While the summer of 2025 will be Superman’s return to the big screen, the summer of 2026 will be the year for the Girl of Steel, with Alcock starring in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie, set for release in June 2026. However, the road to landing the role of Krypton’s last daughter was a challenging one, according to the Australian actress.

In a new interview with Elle, Alcock shared what her experience was like auditioning for the role of Supergirl, before becoming one of the final candidates in DC Studios’ search. For Alcock, it was an incredibly intense process, as she shared the following about going up for the screen test:

Absolute fear. I was kind of in disbelief. I was initially like, ‘What have I done?’ I then invited all my friends over to the house and we drank champagne. During a screen test, you’re in a room with all the other women [vying for the same part] and you’re all dressed as the character. [The studio] will get you lined up in the makeup truck and put the same makeup on you all and then test you on a stage. For Supergirl, it was myself and another girl. It was really scary; I thought I was going to vomit! But it’s just fear! That’s what happens! This job has been a journey of overcoming my own fear.

What Milly Alcock’s Supergirl Story Means For The DCU

As many actors have shared in the past, auditions and screen tests are some of the most challenging aspects for a performer, especially in the case of a major role like Supergirl. It is also crucial to remember that, for Alcock, this marks only her second movie role, after starring in 2018’s The School, which makes the anxiety completely justified. It wouldn’t be shocking to hear other actors from the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow cast having a similar experience when trying out for their respective roles.

From Alcock’s story, however, it’s clear that auditioning for the DCU’s Supergirl also, in many ways, helped her get past her own fear as an actress, and this will be something that helps her with future auditions. Given how mᴀssive Supergirl is as a character, this will shine a huge spotlight on Alcock in 2026, and if Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is well-received, it could open more doors for the House of the Dragon star. As nerve-wrecking as it was for Alcock to try out for Supergirl, it was ultimately worth it.

After hearing what it was like for Alcock to be one of the final actors to be eyed for Supergirl, despite how nervous she was, it’s still a remarkable journey as she is now headlining one of the biggest heroes in the DCU franchise. After landing the role of the Girl of Steel in DC’s Supergirl movie, it will be fascinating to see how the franchise uses Kara in other stories. Hopefully, as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow arrives in 2026, this will be the start of an exciting journey for Alcock’s Kara in the DCU.
