Chris Hemsworth’s recent message is oddly reminiscent of his MCU co-star’s 8 years ago, and it seems to be a clear sign of his Avengers: Doomsday fate. The Asgardian has been a core member of the Avengers since the team’s first iteration in the Infinity Saga. Since the character’s solo debut in 2011’s Thor, Hemsworth has appeared as the God of Thunder in 10 MCU films. He’s one of the few original Avengers to be still considered active in the Multiverse Saga, and Hemsworth was even the first actor announced in Marvel’s big Doomsday cast announcement earlier this year.
It’s been great knowing that Hemsworth is confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, which will be his fifth Avengers film overall. He is one of the few characters introduced in Phase 1 who still play an active part in the MCU, and Thor is already the character with the most solo films to his name. However, fans were already theorizing that Doomsday would be the actor’s farewell to the MCU timeline, and the evidence only grows stronger considering the recent Marvel tribute that Hemsworth posted.
Chris Hemsworth’s Recent Thor Message Already Sounds Like A Farewell
The Actor Has Played Thor For 15 Years
On May 28, Chris Hemsworth posted a video to YouTube тιтled “Thank You! The Legacy Of Thor.” It is a two-minute emotional tribute to Hemsworth’s character that he has played for the past 15 years, with the clips featured ranging from his solo Thor movies to his part in the Avengers films. Other MCU stars that Hemsworth has worked closely with also make appearances to speak on the character’s legacy, including Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Thor: Ragnarok and Love & Thunder director Taika Waiтιтi, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
In the video’s caption, Hemsworth states that playing Thor “has been one of the greatest honors of my life.” Though it may just seem like an uplifting update, especially with Hemsworth mentioning Doomsday on the horizon, the timing is quite odd for him to be posting such a heartfelt tribute. Character tributes often have a tone of finality to them, with the actor reminiscing on the character that they will no longer be playing. Fans were already theorizing that Doomsday would be the end of Thor’s long MCU journey, and Hemsworth’s video has just added fuel to the fire.
Hemsworth’s Comments Sound A Lot Like Chris Evans’ Farewell Before Endgame
Evans Posting A Similar Statement In 2018
Hemsworth’s comments sound awfully similar to another tribute posted by his former MCU co-star. In a now-deleted social media post from 2018, Captain America actor Chris Evans commented on how he officially wrapped filming for Avengers: Endgame and that playing the character for 8 years was an honor. Evans thanked everyone from those on set with him to the audiences watching at home, and it seemed like the actor was trying to wrap up loose ends with his comments.
After Evans’ post, fans speculated that he was saying goodbye to the franchise. He seemed especially sentimental about the fact that he was wrapping filming on Endgame, almost as if he knew that the film would be his last MCU appearance as his beloved character. Evans did in fact end up retiring in Endgame with Steve Rogers pᴀssing on the Captain America shield. Considering how fan speculation ended up being correct the last time a major MCU actor posted a character tribute, it’s no wonder that people are drawing parallels to Hemsworth’s video.
I’m Even More Convinced Hemsworth Is Retiring As Thor After Seeing Evans’ Comments
Avengers: Doomsday Would Be The Perfect Send-Off
Both Evans and Hemsworth have built an incredible legacy in the MCU that spanned almost a decade, and their Marvel counterparts have become synonymous with their careers. It’s no wonder that their respective characters mean so much to them, and it’d only feel fitting to exit the franchise after a deserving farewell. Both actors’ comments sound pretty similar with them expressing graтιтude for their journey and legacy, and we all know what followed for Evans in Endgame after his comments.
Whether Thor ends up dying in Doomsday or simply stepping away from the Avengers’ life, I’m more convinced now than ever that Hemsworth will be exiting the franchise after this film. The MCU is rapidly moving forward with a new generation of heroes and Thor’s narrative might have simply run its course. 15 years is a long commitment for any actor to make to one franchise, and though Hemsworth has obviously enjoyed his time playing Thor, it’d be completely understandable for Avengers: Doomsday to be his last MCU appearance before moving on.
