Every Sinners Box Office Record & Milestone

Sinners has become a bona fide box office phenomenon, pᴀssing multiple major milestones and breaking a variety of records. The 2025 period piece horror movie reteams director Ryan Coogler with star Michael B. Jordan after they previously collaborated on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Jordan plays a dual role as identical twins Smoke and Stack, who return to their hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1932 to open a juke joint, only to discover that they must fend off an evil menace. Sinners also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo.

The movie has proven to be a mᴀssive critical success. Out of the 366 critics’ Sinners reviews that have been tabulated by the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, only 10 gave it a negative rating, earning it a Certified Fresh Tomatometer score of 97% and making it one of their highest-rated theatrical releases of 2025. Audiences have given it similarly glowing reviews with an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 that have earned the movie a Verified H๏τ Popcornmeter score of 96%. This enthusiasm has extended to its commercial performance, as the movie has broken multiple box office records.

Sinners’ Box Office Total (So Far)

It Is One Of The Biggest Hits Of The Year

The Sinners release, which is kicking off its seventh weekend in theaters at the time of publication, has already reached an enormous cumulative total at the global box office. As of Wednesday, May 28, which is the last day to have box office actuals at the time of writing, it has grossed $261 million in domestic theaters and $79.9 million in international markets, giving it a global haul of $340.9 million. That total makes it the sixth highest-grossing movie of 2025 so far, behind Thunderbolts*, Lilo & Sтιтch, Captain America: Brave New World, A Minecraft Movie, and Ne Zha 2.

Ne Zha 2 is an animated smash hit from China that became the first movie in history to earn more than $1 billion in a single territory.

Because movies typically need to earn back at least two and a half times their price tags in order to turn a profit in theaters, the unusually high budget of Sinners gave it a huge hurdle to overcome. It reportedly cost around $90 million, which places its estimated break-even point at around $225 million, which is a mᴀssive milestone that only 28 other horror movies have surpᴀssed throughout cinema history. While its budget meant that it would have to become a generation-defining hit just to earn its money back, it has actually done so, surpᴀssing that milestone with relative ease.

In its opening weekend alone, the Sinners box office broke a number of notable records. The movie made $48 million at the domestic box office, which earned it the best Easter debut for an R-rated movie (beating 2002’s Panic Room), the best opening weekend for an original R-rated horror movie since 2021’s Halloween Kills, and the ninth best opening weekend of all time for any R-rated horror movie (beating 2023’s Scream VI). Its global debut of $63 million also gave it the best opening weekend for an original movie of any genre in the entirety of the 2020s so far.

[Sinners beat] the horror genre’s curse of typically having huge week 2 drops of 50% or more…

However, the opening weekend of Sinners was just the tip of the iceberg. During its sophomore weekend at the domestic box office, it dropped 4.8%. In addition to beating the horror genre’s curse of typically having huge week 2 drops of 50% or more, this was the second-smallest week 2 drop of all time for an R-rated horror movie behind Heart Eyes (+19%), which had an added boost that Sinners lacked because Valentine’s Day took place during its sophomore weekend. In addition to being a popular night for movie dates, Valentine’s is the holiday on which Heart Eyes is set.

In its sophomore weekend at the domestic box office, the Michael B. Jordan movie earned the best second weekend ever for a non-Marvel Ryan Coogler movie and the second-best sophomore weekend for an R-rated horror movie (behind 2017’s It). As Sinners‘ theatrical release continued, it broke additional records, becoming Coogler’s highest-grossing non-Marvel movie of all time and earning the director’s best-ever domestic multiplier (which is a movie’s total box office divided by its opening weekend). While Sinners‘ final multiplier remains to be seen, it has already surpᴀssed Creed‘s previous high of 3.7, hitting roughly 5.44 by the time of writing.

Box Office Milestones Sinners Has Crossed

Another Big One Is In Its Sights

In addition to breaking box office records, Sinners has sped past a number of notable milestones both at the domestic box office and worldwide. For instance, in North America, it only took nine days for it to pᴀss the $100 million milestone. It followed that by crossing the $150 million milestone on day 15 and the $200 million milestone (which only 22 R-rated movies had ever crossed before) on day 23. While it is slowing down enough that it may never hit $300 million, it recently crossed the $250 million domestic milestone on day 36, which was Friday, May 23.

Sinners was the 136th fastest movie in history to pᴀss the $200 million milestone at the domestic box office.

While the Ryan Coogler movie’s international grosses have consistently trailed behind its domestic performance, potentially because of the specificity of its period American setting, overseas territories have still contributed to it hitting a robust series of milestones at the global box office. After surpᴀssing the $50 million milestone worldwide during its opening weekend, it pᴀssed $150 million by the end of its second weekend and $200 million in its third. It finally crossed the $300 million milestone at the beginning of its fifth weekend in theaters, and could very well surpᴀss $350 million by the end of its theatrical run.

In the wake of all its box office success both at home and internationally, Sinners has also landed on a number of notable box office charts. At the time of writing, per The Numbers, it is in the Top 500 highest-grossing movies of all time, at No. 488. It is also ranked as the 65th highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time worldwide and the 11th highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time at the domestic box office. On that latter chart, it is the second highest-ranked horror movie, behind only the 2017 Stephen King adaptation It, which grossed $701 million worldwide.
