Warning: SPOILERS for Bring Her Back!Bring Her Back offers a deep exploration of grief and just how far someone would be willing to go to bring back a loved one. Not only is it absolutely terrifying, it is filled with twists and turns, including the devastating loss of a fan-favorite character. While it certainly adds more to the story, it is still a tough scene to watch.
This is not Danny and Michael Philippou’s first attempt at horror. Talk To Me, which was widely well-received by both critics and audiences, was their first horror film with A24. It should come as no surprise to learn that both of these films were being written and developed at the same time, as both tackle grief and trauma, just in very different ways. Bring Her Back is currently playing in theaters.
ScreenRant caught up with Danny Philippou, Michael Philippou, Sora Wong, Billy Barratt, and Jonah Wren Phillips to break down the devastating death of Andy towards the end of Bring Her Back. While this is an important part of the story, it is still a mᴀssive gut punch, as he is a really likable character who is just trying to do what is best for his sister.
Bring Her Back Directors Reveal Andy Did Not Originally Die
“But Then I Met Billy” Danny Philippou Jokes
Fans are sure to be in an uproar after the death of Andy in Bring Her Back. He is an extremely likable character, thanks to the stellar performance by Billy Barratt, but there may be some solace in knowing he was not always going to meet that fate.
“He actually didn’t die initially,” Danny Philippou explains. “But then once we met Billy…” he jokes. The truth is that there were several different endings at one point or another, but when the movie really got going, the brothers knew that Andy could not make it out alive.
Even I was like, oh, that’s a bit far, isn’t it?
“We don’t want to say exactly the reasons why,” Michael Philippou details. “The thing is, it was heartbreaking, and it’s awful to watch on screen. Because Billy played it so well, and him and Sora’s relationship was so real. Even I was like, oh, that’s a bit far, isn’t it? I do apologize.“
Michael goes on to say “Well, for story purposes, with the connection with Laura losing her child…” before being cut off by his brother, who reminds him, “Hey, you said you weren’t going to spoil it.“
Billy Barratt Reveals His Reaction To Finding Out He Was To Die In Bring Her Back
“It Just Adds To Those Three Levels Of Emotion At The End Of The Film.”
Phillips, who is not a part of Andy’s death scene, but does have several scenes opposite Barratt earlier in the film, recalls “I just read it in the script, and it was sad.“
Wong had a similar reaction to finding out her on-screen brother was not going to make it to the end of the movie. “Can I be for real right now? I read the script. I cried,” she remembers, before throwing in another good-natured ribbing at Barratt. “And then I met Billy.“
“As you can tell, they all love me.” Barratt laughs. “I think the fact it leaves you feeling that is really important. I kind of felt that as well. But then also the shock factor of it just adds to those three levels of emotion at the end of the film.” He turns to the brothers, as if for confirmation, “Which there are three levels, I think? I won’t spoil it.“
