Ridley Scott’s Post-Apocalyptic Sci-Fi Movie Sets 2026 Release Date

Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie, The Dog Stars, will reportedly arrive in 2026. Starring Jacob Elordi (Euphoria), Josh Brolin (Dune), and Margaret Qualley (The Substance), the Gladiator II director’s next film is based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel of the same name. With a script by Twisters‘ Mark L. Smith, the movie is set in the aftermath of a catastrophic flu virus that nearly wiped out humanity.

According to Variety, The Dog Stars is scheduled to arrive on March 27, 2026, with filming currently underway. This update comes after Disney re-scheduled several of their projects, including both of their Avengers movies. Scott’s movie is under 20th Century Studios.

What This Means For The Dog Stars

The Dog Stars Will Arrive In Less Than A Year

Scott has several upcoming projects under various stages of development. The Dog Stars, which is scheduled to be the next, will arrive in spring. Previously, it was reported that the director would try his hand at a biopic of Bee Gees after the Elordi-headlined movie. Meanwhile, the director is also developing a third Gladiator movie and a new Alien movie, although their progress is currently unknown.

The Dog Stars was announced in November 2024 ahead of Gladiator II‘s release, which makes its announcement-to-release time short, given that many projects took years to make. In addition to the three lead stars, the ensemble cast has also recently added Benedict Wong for an unknown role. While details are under wraps, the movie follows Hig (Elordi), a civilian pilot, and a tough ex-marine (Brolin), who face invaders and the hope for a better life outside their current dwelling.

Our Take On The Dog Stars’ Release

Hopefully, It Will Be A Worthy Follow-Up To Gladiator II

Jacob Elordi in The Mortuary Collection

Scott has a reputation for efficiency and swiftness in making movies. His techniques include thorough planning, using multiple cameras to reduce the time spent on each take, and working with trusted stars and crew, which is reflected in the upcoming movie’s casting choices. However, his filming style has also raised questions about quality, especially since his recent movies like Gladiator II were met with more criticism. Nevertheless, The Dog Stars will hit theaters in less than a year, which sounds like an ambitious plan, especially since the movie is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie that involves potentially heavy visual effects.
