I’m Not Surprised This New Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Cast Member Stole The Show

The following contains spoilers for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, now playing in theatersOne of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning‘s best new characters completely stole the show, and I want to see more of him if the franchise continues. The largely episodic nature of the Mission: Impossible series has led to the introduction of lots of minor allies and enemies across the course of the series. The Final Reckoning‘s cast of characters boasts several TV stars in minor roles, fleshing out the President’s cabinet and giving her more characters to bounce off while debating the government’s response to Ethan Hunt’s plans and actions.

One of the best new characters in the film follows a similar trajectory, with a fan-favorite actor making the leap from one of TV’s most acclaimed dramas to Mission: Impossible as a military commander who works with Ethan to help save the world. The performance, although only a minor part of the overall film, is also one of the most memorable aspects of the movie. Here’s who plays Captain Bledsoe and why he should return if there is any future entries in the Mission: Impossible series.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning introduces audiences to Tramell Tillman’s submarine Captain Bledsoe, and he’s already one of my favorite minor characters in the whole franchise. Bledsoe is introduced about halfway through The Final Reckoning as the captain of the secretive submarine that’s operating in the Baltic Sea. He’s surprised by the sudden presence of Ethan Hunt on his sub and is skeptical of Ethan’s plans, but is also impressed with the IMF agent and quickly agrees to aid him in his mission to reach the Sevastopol.

Bledsoe is far from the first fan-favorite character actor to appear as a one-off ally to Ethan Hunt, but there is a fun edge to Tillman that stands out from other similar minor characters. His incredible smile as he realizes the kind of help Ethan needs is infectious and reflective of the series at its best, when it takes on seemingly impossible challenges with an air of gleeful confidence. Bledsoe doesn’t appear in much else of the film beyond a cameo towards the end of the movie, but he’s easily one of the most memorable side-characters in the movie.

Tramell Tillman’s Icy Cool Performances Are Great In Severance And Mission: Impossible

Tramell Tillman, being one of the most memorable minor elements of The Final Reckoning, shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has seen the actor in Severance​​​​. The hit Apple TV+ show utilizes the actor’s natural magnetism and cool confidence in a very different manner, casting him as the casually intimidating Milchick. Both Milchick and Bledsoe benefit from the actor’s delivery, which remains steely cool regardless of the circumstances or setting.

Tramell Tillman is the perfect example of how a similar approach to two very different characters can create divergent (but memorable) performances.

Tillman uses that to chilling effect in Severance, especially when other characters try to confront him or challenge his authority. He remains cordial but becomes almost unsettingly polite and controlled, hinting at a darker and grander design. By contrast, Tillman is blunt with his questions and comments in The Final Reckoning, but in a way that feels right at home in a setting where Ethan Hunt openly admits he’s sometimes just improvising his way through crisis events. Tillman is the perfect example of how a similar approach to two very different characters can create divergent (but memorable) performances.

I’m glad Captain Bledsoe didn’t remain a vital part of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, because it would have been distracting to have him suddenly take over a major role in the overarching plot. However, it’s exciting to see the actor flexing his creative chops in films like Tom Cruise’s latest blockbuster. He’s a calm and cool presence in the movie, and exactly the kind of supporting character the series has always had a good knack for.

If Mission: Impossible were to continue going forward, Bledsoe would be a compelling figure to bring back for new adventures. He could follow a similar arc to other allies of Ethan Hunt and the IMF, providing services to the secret agents as needed. He could also move in the same path as Angela Bᴀssett’s former CIA director Erika Sloane and enter public office. Bledsoe is a great minor addition to the Mission: Impossible franchise, and would be the perfect supporting character to expand in any prospective sequel to Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
