The Devil Wears Prada 2’s Release Date Is Perfect

The Devil Wears Prada 2 has set a release date that is astoundingly perfect. The movie will be the first feature-length sequel to the iconic 2006 dramedy The Devil Wears Prada, which was directed by David Frankel (Marley & Me, Inventing Anna) from a screenplay by Aline Brosh McKenna (the co-creator of The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend with Rachel Bloom) based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Lauren Weisberger. It followed wannabe writer Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) getting a job as an ᴀssistant to powerful fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), who treats her ᴀssistants like dirt.

In July 2024, Disney officially announced that the upcoming The Devil Wears Prada 2 was in development, with Brosh McKenna returning alongside producer Wendy Finnerman. Reportedly, Meryl Streep will also be reprising her role as Miranda Priestley opposite Emily Blunt as Emily, who was Priestly’s lead ᴀssistant in the original movie. However, no cast returns have been confirmed, and there has been no official word whatsoever on the returns of Anne Hathawy, Stanley Tucci (as Runway magazine’s art director Nigel Kipling), Simon Baker (as writer and Andy love interest Christian Thompson), or Adrian Grenier (as Andy’s not-entirely-supportive boyfriend Nate Cooper).

Devil Wears Prada 2 Has Now Set A 2026 Release Date

Its Development Has Continued Rolling Forward

While a lot is still up in the air about the sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2 was recently set to debut in theaters on May 1, 2026. This means that the follow-up to the iconic Meryl Streep movie will debut just a few weeks before the upcoming Colleen Hoover adaptation Verity (May 15, 2026) and the anticipated Star Wars movie The Mandalorian and Grogu, positioned just before the beginning of the 2026 summer movie season (which includes further sequels to major movies, including Toy Story 5, Minions 3, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day).

The Devil Wears Prada earned Meryl Streep her 14th Oscar nomination, though she lost to Helen Mirren in The Queen.

This will mark almost exactly 20 years after the release of the original, which debuted on June 30, 2006, and grossed $326.7 million against its reported budget of roughly $40 million. This proves that the 2026 movie could perform well as the summer season begins to heat up, drawing in audiences as a major tentpole. In fact, it could potentially do even better than the first movie, as the success of the original means that the sequel comes attached to an even stronger IP than the 2006 adaptation did.

Devil Wears Prada 2 Coincides With The Weekend Of 2026 Met Gala

The Movie Has Multiple Connections To The Fashion Event

Not only does this release date for The Devil Wears Prada 2 almost perfectly coincide with the 20th anniversary of the original movie, it lands perfectly on the calendar alongside the 2026 Met Gala, which is set to take place on May 4, 2026. The iconic fashion world event, which is organized by Vogue magazine, benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Insтιтute and features many of the era’s brightest stars strutting the red carpet in haute couture outfits.

[Vogue editor-in-chief Anna] Wintour’s implicit connection to Miranda Priestly will likely put even more attention on the movie.

The buzz around the gala will almost certainly help increase interest in the 2026 movie, which is presumably still set in the world of high fashion. Additionally, the movie’s connection to the Met Gala is even more direct given the fact that the book is widely considered a roman à clef, as it was written after Weisberger spent time as a personal ᴀssistant to notorious Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Wintour’s implicit connection to Miranda Priestly will likely put even more attention on the movie than the Met Gala already would.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 Release Is Perfect, But Let’s Cross Our Fingers That It Happens

It Needs To Move Forward At A Steady Pace

There is one potential roadblock to this perfect release date, which is the fact that there are no filming updates available for the sequel, so it may not be ready in time to debut in May 2026. If it is anything like the original movie, The Devil Wears Prada 2 will not require extended turnaround time because it is a movie about real people without major special effects requirements that would cause post-production to drag on. However, it will most likely need to begin principal pH๏τography by September 2025 if it hopes to make that date.
