Plenty of long-time Bond audiences are immediately skeptical of Amazon’s Bond acquisition because of how content-driven it will surely be, so anything that seems overly familiar or derivative is only going to fan those flames even further. Christopher Nolan’s name was reportedly in the conversation for a while, and that certainly would have been interesting, but Cuarón is ultimately a better choice. Tenet has already shown us what Nolan is capable of doing within the spy genre, but it’s something that remains unexplored (and thus more interesting) in Cuarón’s filmography.

Plus, Nolan is clearly trying to drift away from IP like James Bond by creating bold, daring, original projects like Oppenheimer and The Odyssey. Although he’s expressed interest in working on James Bond in the past, the projects he’s currently working on seem much more interesting. Nolan’s best movies tend to be those without too much studio interference, and that’s not something that would be guaranteed on Bond 26.

Ultimately, the fact that Cuarón has expressed interest in joining the James Bond franchise already should be enough incentive for Amazon to make that happen. They’ve been looking for the perfect director for a long time, and a brilliant candidate has clearly put himself forward. There’s no reason this couldn’t happen. Additionally, Cuarón and David Heyman (who is producing Amazon’s Bond reboot) have previously worked together on Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban, making this reunion even more likely in the future.
