I’m Convinced Godzilla X Kong: Supernova’s Villain Is This Underrated 54-Year-Old Kaiju, Not SpaceGodzilla Or Gigan

It’s possible that Godzilla x Kong: Supernova‘s villain isn’t SpaceGodzilla or Gigan, but an underrated 54-year-old kaiju. The sixth film in the Monsterverse franchise, directed by Grant Sputore with a script written by David Callaham and Michael Lloyd Green, will reportedly follow the two тιтular тιтans as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova‘s cast includes Dan Stevens reprising his role as Trapper alongside several new characters played by Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Matthew Modine, Delroy Lindo, Alycia Debnam-Carey, and Sam Neill.

The тιтle Godzilla x Kong: Supernova was announced earlier this month in a brief teaser video that also confirmed that the film is currently in production and set for a 2027 release. Though the teaser itself doesn’t offer much insight into the storyline or characters, the тιтle itself has sparked numerous fan theories about who the film’s villain could be. No matter who the villain is, the subтιтle Supernova, which by definition refers to the bright and powerful explosion of a star, seems to suggest that the sequel’s villain will be coming from outer space.

Godzilla X Kong: Supernova’s тιтle Has Led To Lots Of SpaceGodzilla & Gigan Speculation

They’re The Two Biggest Theories

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova‘s тιтle has led to lots of speculation that the villain will be either SpaceGodzilla or Gigan. These are the two biggest theories and, in terms of Godzilla villains, they are the two biggest names, so they are understandably receiving a lot of attention. The term supernova has the strongest link to the notorious SpaceGodzilla, who would be perhaps the most obvious cosmic adversary to bring into the Monsterverse movie.

First appearing in Toho’s 1994 film Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, the cosmic creature originated from Godzilla’s G-cells, which mutated after pᴀssing through a black hole. A more terrifying version of the classic kaiju, SpaceGodzilla fused with a crystalline substance while drifting through space, resulting in crystal structures on its body. While these crystals grant SpaceGodzilla powerful abilities, they also act as a vulnerability that enemies can exploit.

Supernova‘s space-themed тιтle could also hint at the introduction of another extraterrestrial enemy from Godzilla’s history, such as Gigan. Known as one of the most formidable adversaries in the Toho movie series, Gigan would be a fitting villain to reintroduce in the current Monsterverse. First appearing in Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972), Gigan is a mᴀssive alien creature with a reptilian appearance who was transformed into a cyborg and enhanced with mechanical features by an extraterrestrial species known as the Nebulans.

Godzilla X Kong: Supernova Could Also Be A Tease Of Hedorah

They Were Introduced In 1971’s Godzilla Vs. Hedorah

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova‘s тιтle could also tease Hedorah, another cosmic creature who would make an interesting addition to the Monsterverse movie. First appearing in the 1971 film Godzilla vs. Hedorah, the creature originates from the Dark Gas Nebula in the Orion constellation. Hedorah arrives on Earth via a pᴀssing comet, crash-landing in Suruga Bay in a tadpole-like form that grows larger as it absorbs pollution from the water.

As it evolves, Hedorah wreaks havoc across Japan, killing thousands and feeding on toxic waste and gas emissions. It becomes increasingly powerful, transitioning through aquatic and terrestrial stages before reaching its towering bipedal “Perfect Form,” which it can interchange with a smaller flying form at will. Hedorah easily overwhelms Godzilla with its immense strength and resilience, though it’s eventually revealed that the creature is vulnerable to extreme heat capable of dehydrating it.

Hedorah represented a different kind of fear – one rooted in the nation’s growing environmental crisis.

Hedorah was named after the Japanese word “hedorom,” which refers to sludge, slime, vomit, or chemical ooze — fitting for a creature born of pollution. While Godzilla symbolized Japan’s post-war anxieties about nuclear weapons and atomic devastation, Hedorah represented a different kind of fear – one rooted in the nation’s growing environmental crisis. Specifically, the monster was inspired by the real-life tragedy of Yokkaichi asthma, a respiratory illness caused by the severe air pollution and industrial smog plaguing Japan during the era.

Hedorah Would Actually Perfectly Fit With The Monsterverse

& Its Themes Of Humanity & Nature Working Together

Hedorah would make a compelling and timely addition to the Monsterverse movie. Having Hedorah step into a major villain role in the Monsterverse would offer a straightforward way for the franchise to tackle the issue of environmental pollution, as the creature becomes stronger by feeding on waste. This could create a thematic link to earlier Monsterverse movies like Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which suggests that humanity’s harmful influence on the environment, such as pollution, makes people the true threat to the planet.

Hedorah’s capacity to evolve by acquiring new powers and forms would also make it a dynamic and ever-changing threat throughout the film. This constant transformation would enhance its appeal as an antagonist, keeping the audience engaged as it becomes increasingly powerful and unpredictable. Such a creature would raise the stakes for the two тιтular тιтans in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, as they must adapt just as quickly to survive.

Importantly, Hedorah was only defeated through a collaboration between Godzilla and humanity.

Importantly, Hedorah was only defeated through a collaboration between Godzilla and humanity. Revisiting that narrative element could reinforce the franchise’s ongoing themes of cooperation between humanity and nature in the face of greater dangers, rather than mutual destruction. Hedorah fits naturally as the kind of cosmic menace that could anchor Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, offering both a formidable physical adversary and a symbolically rich embodiment of nature’s wrath.

Hedorah Is Deserving Of Being Godzilla X Kong: Supernova’s Villain

They’re A Great Villain Who Deserves The Big Stage

Godzilla faces off with Hedorah in Godzilla vs Hedorah

While Hedorah might not be as well-known or celebrated as some other monsters, they’re a great Godzilla villain who deserves to be seen on the big stage in Supernova. In fact, Hedorah is one of the unique and most conceptually rich kaijus in Godzilla’s rogues’ gallery – a creature whose threat lies not just in brute strength, but in the terrifying implications of its origin. Born from pollution and thriving off humanity’s waste, Hedorah isn’t just a monster, he is a warning to humanity about the harmful effects of pollution on the environment.

While Hedorah might not enjoy the same name recognition as SpaceGodzilla or Gigan, the Smog Monster should not be counted out.

Hedorah’s bizarre biology, grotesque design, and constantly evolving form set it apart visually and conceptually from other villains in the franchise. Bringing Hedorah into Godzilla x Kong: Supernova would offer the Monsterverse an opportunity to do something different – to tell a cautionary tale grounded in the real-world threat of environmental collapse, while still delivering the mᴀssive monster mayhem that audiences expect. While Hedorah might not enjoy the same name recognition as SpaceGodzilla or Gigan, the Smog Monster should not be counted out.
