After the Thunderbolts* introduced The New Avengers to the world, Daredevil: Born Again‘s Matt Murdock has even more reason to stand his ground against Mayor Wilson Fisk’s anti-vigilante measures. The premiere season of Daredevil: Born Again saw Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio break into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in spectacular fashion as the pair faced off on multiple fronts in New York City. However, despite Murdock’s position as an established and well-respected lawyer, Fisk fast-tracked respect and power in the city by becoming the Mayor.
Throughout season 1, the pair struggle to settle into their new roles, while they are both haunted by the pasts they tried to leave behind. However, it ultimately leads to the two men getting into a major conflict that is expected to evolve significantly in season 2. But after the events of Thunderbolts*, it feels as though the stakes have been raised once again in the battle between ordinary citizens and vigilante justice, especially with the colorful pasts of The New Avengers.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 Ends With Kingpin Making Life Harder For New York’s Vigilantes
The Anti-Vigilante Task Force Are Working Overtime To Take Control Of New York
Throughout Daredevil: Born Again season 1, Fisk becomes increasingly frustrated with red tape, democratic procedures, and the slow progress of the government. As a result, he begins to take matters into his own hands, employing some of his shadier methods from his former life as Kingpin, and he establishes an Anti-Vigilante Task Force to help him take control of the city. The issue is, Fisk is not a reformed man, and his task force is made up of the most corrupt, brutal officers in law enforcement who are more than willing to bend the rules, and Fisk gives them a free pᴀss to do so.
Despite Murdock donning the Daredevil suit again, and saving citizens from the threat of a terrifying serial killer, Fisk enacts a number of measures to supposedly “save” the city, and capture vigilantes like Daredevil. Evidently, things will not be easy for Matt, but he has plans to form a team of his own to fight back against the mayor’s corrupt agenda. However, another superhero team certainly doesn’t make Matt’s rebellion any more straightforward.
Thunderbolts* Seemingly Giving The Green Light To The New Avengers Is A Complicated Matter
The New Avengers Are Not Exactly The Most Heroic Heroes
In Thunderbolts*, a group of misfit mercenaries gather together in an effort to take down Valentina Allegra de Fontaine after she betrays them. However, a twist of fate sees them form a team, and fight a threat that could have consumed all of New York. In the aftermath, before the dust settles, Valentina declares this new team as The New Avengers, and they become an official, government-sanctioned superhero team. But none of The New Avengers have clean hands.
The team comprises a former Russian spy who infiltrated and stole secrets from SHIELD, who also happens to be a super soldier. A disgraced Captain America replacement, a former Black Widow ᴀssᴀssin, and two elite killers who have spent most of their lives being manipulated to complete shady missions for covert operations. Most of these figures have also spent some time in the last few years as mercenaries. But, now, they have all found redemption as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, with their records apparently wiped clean.
Daredevil Looks Like He’ll Have Even More Reason To Take Down Kingpin In Daredevil: Born Again Season 2
Matt Murdock Will Not Go Down Without A Fight
Matt Murdock is a successful lawyer who is well-versed in how to navigate precedents and win a case when things are not fair. However, it appears that it won’t be a very straightforward effort for Murdock to prove why vigilantes like Daredevil and others from Hell’s Kitchen and the surrounding area have a right to do what they do, despite never having killed anyone, as the supposed heroes in The New Avengers now have. This has got to be a painful development for Matt, who tries desperately to save others and live by a code, only to see others rewarded for doing less.
However, it’s unlikely Murdock will wallow in pity and frustration about this for long, considering he has his targets set on Mayor Fisk. Murdock is set to form a team of vigilantes, who, ironically, largely operate without masks, to help him fight back against Fisk and his unreasonable measures on the city. If he can call on the newly formed New Avengers for help, it could help build his case against Fisk, but it’s unlikely that Daredevil: Born Again season 2 will pay much heed to the events of Thunderbolts* beyond a mention.
