Every Tom Cruise Movie In Development After Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning may possibly be Tom Cruise’s last movie in the iconic spy franchise, but he thankfully has many more films lined up. Over the years, Cruise has garnered a reputation as an actor who almost always stars in the highest quality of films. Sure, he has been involved in some disappointing blockbusters in recent years, such as 2016’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and 2017’s The Mummy. However, more often than not, Cruise stars in fantastic movies.

Tom Cruise’s best movies include critical darlings like Eyes Wide Shut and Magnolia, as well as action blockbusters such as Edge of Tomorrow, Top: Gun Maverick, and the Mission: Impossible films. In many ways, the recently released Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is the end of a chapter for Cruise’s career. The acclaimed actor has spent almost three decades playing IMF agent Ethan Hunt, but may never return to the role. However, Cruise thankfully has many upcoming movies in development that fans of the actor should be very excited about.

Top Gun 3

Top Gun Is Now One Of Cruise’s Most Profitable Franchises

After the mᴀssive success of 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, it only made sense for Cruise to start developing a third film. Top Gun: Maverick grossed over $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office (via Box Office Mojo), and is also one of the most critically acclaimed movies of recent years, getting nominated for Best Picture at the 2023 Academy Awards. Cruise has been confirmed to star in the upcoming Top Gun 3, along with Miles Teller and Glen Powell, who played “Rooster” and “Hangman” in Maverick.

While anticipation is high for Top Gun 3, development hasn’t been moving that quickly since Cruise and the rest of the creative team want to make sure the script is perfect. However, now that Cruise may be done with the Mission: Impossible series, it would make sense for him to return to his other biggest franchise. Therefore, while news about Top Gun 3 has been slow, more information about the third film will likely be released in the coming years.

Broadsword

Broadsword Will Be A WWII Action Movie

After Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Cruise is not going to stop collaborating with Christopher McQuarrie. McQuarrie directed Cruise in the last four Mission: Impossible movies, as well as in 2012’s Jack Reacher. They have become very close friends in real life, and will make several upcoming movies together. Firstly, Cruise will star in McQuarrie’s upcoming World War II film Broadsword.

The only survivor of his mission, Cruise’s character will team up with a local girl to traverse the dangerous, war-torn landscape and reach safety.

In Broadsword, Cruise will play a Marine Sergeant who crash lands in France during the Second World War. The only survivor of his mission, Cruise’s character will team up with a local girl to traverse the dangerous, war-torn landscape and reach safety. The cast of Broadsword will also include Marion Cotillard and Henry Cavill, who Cruise and McQuarrie previously collaborated with on 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

The Gauntlet

The Gauntlet Will Be A Rare Tom Cruise Remake

The Gauntlet will star Cruise and will also be directed by McQuarrie. It will be a remake of the 1977 movie of the same name, which starred Clint Eastwood. In the action/thriller film, Cruise will play Detective Shockley, who must transport a witness to testify against a dangerous mobster. However, they will be betrayed by corrupt police officers and must hijack a bus to try to make it to the courthouse alive.

Just like Broadsword, The Gauntlet sounds like another high-stakes film from Cruise and McQuarrie. Through their collaborations, the actor/director duo have mastered creating action and tension, so this film will likely do justice to the 1977 original. In addition to Cruise, The Gauntlet will also feature Scarlett Johansson, who will bring even more star power to the project.

Tom Cruise Set The Action Genre Aside For This Movie

Cruise has experienced somewhat of a career resurgence in recent years, which has opened up many doors for him to collaborate with some of the world’s greatest directors. For an upcoming movie, Cruise will be teaming up with Alejandro González Iñárritu, who is a two-time Best Director winner at the Academy Awards for his work on 2014’s Birdman and 2015’s The Revenant.

The stacked cast of Cruise and Iñárritu’s upcoming movie will also include Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, and Emma D’Arcy.

In the currently unтιтled film, which is set for an October 2, 2026 release date, Cruise will play the most powerful man in the world who ends up causing a disaster and must embark on a mission to prove himself to humanity. According to Iñárritu, unlike the other movies on this list, this film won’t have much action, which means that Cruise won’t be required to pull off insane stunts. Because of this, Iñárritu has claimed that this movie will once again show off Tom Cruise’s “unprecendented” range as an actor.

Edge of Tomorrow 2

Fans Have Been Asking For Edge Of Tomorrow 2 For Years

Even though a sequel to 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow hasn’t been officially confirmed, it has been previously reported that it is in development. Therefore, while an official announcement hasn’t yet been made, a script for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel is definitely being worked on. If this script lives up to the story of the critically acclaimed first film, then it’s likely that Warner Bros. will officially greenlight the sequel.

According to Doug Liman, who directed Edge of Tomorrow, Warner Bros. is “constantly” asking about when the sequel will happen. In 2024, Cruise signed a significant deal with Warner Bros. which ensures that he will make both original and franchise movies with the studio in the coming years. Therefore, it seems like all the pieces are finally in place for Edge of Tomorrow 2 to be officially confirmed and for development to move forward.

Deeper

Deeper Will Take Cruise Deep Into The Ocean

In addition to McQuarrie, it also seems like Cruise will team up with Liman on several movies in the coming years. In addition to the potential Edge of Tomorrow sequel, Cruise will also film a supernatural thriller movie тιтled Deeper. According to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Cruise will reportedly play a disgraced astronaut in Deeper who discovers a dangerous force while on a deep dive in a previously unexplored trench.

Unlike Cruise’s aforementioned collaboration with Iñárritu, Deeper will definitely require a lot of stunts. Much of the film will seemingly be filmed underwater, and Cruise has already started diving training with Ana de Armas, who will reportedly star in the movie alongside him. The biggest obstacle Deeper is currently facing is its budget, which will be around $200 million, but Cruise is apparently determined to shoot the film very soon.

Unтιтled Movie With SpaceX

This Will Be The First Movie Filmed In Space

In addition to Deeper, Cruise is also planning to film a movie set entirely in space with Liman. While Cruise is reportedly prioritizing Deeper over this space movie, it is still on the docket for the actor. While it is still likely many years away, this will undoubtedly end up being a standout movie in Cruise’s career since it will be the first Hollywood production filmed in space.

For this film, Cruise and his team reportedly want to film on the International Space Station.

To make this film possible, Cruise, Liman, and McQuarrie are working with both NASA and SpaceX. For this film, Cruise and his team reportedly want to film on the International Space Station. This will also likely be one of the most dangerous movies of his career, since Tom Cruise may have to do practical stunts in space.

Days of Thunder Sequel

Days Of Thunder 2 Will Be Another Tom Cruise Legacy Sequel

After the overwhelming success of Top Gun: Maverick, it shouldn’t be surprising that Cruise is planning to make another legacy sequel. Cruise has confirmed development on a sequel to Days of Thunder, his NASCAR racing movie that was released in 1990. In the original film, Cruise plays Cole Trickle, who develops a bitter rivalry with Michael Rooker’s Rowdy Burns. However, when they are both seriously injured during a race, the two end up becoming close friends.

The original Days of Thunder film only has a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes (via Rotten Tomatoes), so many people were surprised when this was announced as Cruise’s next legacy sequel. However, the first Top Gun film also doesn’t have the strongest reviews, so Maverick’s success proves that Days of Thunder 2 could also be a hit with audiences. Not much is known about the Days of Thunder sequel, but it will be exciting to see Tom Cruise behind the wheel of a race car once again.
