New Fear Street Movie’s Debut Rotten Tomatoes Score Sets Record Low For Netflix Horror Franchise

The Rotten Tomatoes score for Fear Street: Prom Queen has been revealed. It’s Netflix’s latest foray into the Fear Street horror franchise, which began in 2021 with Fear Street Part One: 1994. Prom Queen sees director Matt Palmer take over after the previous three projects were directed by Leigh Janiak. This latest version of the slasher horror film follows the story of a high school where those competing for prom queen begin to disappear. The Fear Street: Prom Queen cast includes India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, Katherine Waterston, and Chris Klein.

Now, the Rotten Tomatoes score for Fear Street: Prom Queen is a 48% Tomatometer with 23 critics’ reviews so far. It does not yet have a Popcornmeter. This score is subject to some change, as the movie was just released on Netflix. If the score stands, it will be considered the lowest-scored movie in the franchise.

What This Means For The Fear Street Franchise

Prom Queen Has The Worst Reviews By Far

One of the movie’s lackluster reviews came from ScreenRant‘s Ferdosa Abdi, who gave the movie 6 out of 10 stars. Abdi’s review noted that the film was “entertaining,” but “doesn’t quite meet the bar set by 1994 and 1978.” Other reviews were far more scathing, including from Slashfilm‘s Chris Evangelista, who said “this movie isn’t just bad, it looks bad.” Others found the film to be weakly plotted and at times boring, and many took issue with the characters. As the days go on, it will be interesting to see what the public’s reaction is.

Fear Street: Prom Queen has set the unfortunate record of being the lowest-rated movie within the horror franchise. It is also the first of the Fear Street movies to get a rotten score on the critics’ aggregate site. All the other three movies were Certified Fresh, with Tomatometers above 80%. Audiences have generally aligned with the critics about this franchise, so it seems unlikely that the Popcornmeter for Prom Queen will end up being much higher than its Tomatometer.

Our Take On The Fear Street: Prom Queen Rotten Tomatoes Score

This Isn’t Great For The Franchise

Fear Street: Prom Queen‘s poor reviews don’t bode well for the franchise’s future. R.L. Stein, who wrote the book series on which Fear Street is based, commented earlier this year that there are three Fear Street movies in development. If Prom Queen was included in these three, there are at least two more movies slated for the horror franchise. Hopefully, the negative reviews for Fear Street: Prom Queen are just a hiccup, but this will raise some questions about the franchise’s future and how it can improve from here.

On the other hand, it’s still quite possible that audiences will respond better to the movie. This has been the case with many horror movies in general, and the latest installment is no different. Ultimately, viewership will be key for Fear Street: Prom Queen, and if it’s satisfactory, Netflix will keep the horror franchise alive.
