Marvel Studios has delayed Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga has yet to see the release of an Avengers movie, even though Thunderbolts* technically was one in disguise. The MCU’s upcoming Avengers movies will bring in Fox’s original X-Men to the franchise, see the Fantastic Four team up with the Avengers, and introduce Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. However, fans will have to wait longer for what are expected to be two of the MCU’s best movies to arrive, as both projects have now suffered delays.
Marvel has delayed Avengers: Doomsday from May 1, 2026, to December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars from May 7, 2027, to December 17, 2027. The delays come as the first of those two movies recently entered production. Marvel created a huge event to announce the cast of Avengers: Doomsday online, with filming now underway and Avengers: Doomsday set pH๏τos showing the aftermath of an X-Men fight with Sentinels.
Marvel Studios still has three dates for unтιтled movies in 2028: February 18, May 5, and November 10.
The Avengers movie delays were not the only changes to the MCU’s schedule. Disney has removed the February 2026 date for an “Unтιтled Marvel” movie. The studio also made changes to the dates of November 6, 2026, and November 5, 2027, which once belonged to Marvel films but are now slotted for “Unтιтled Disney” movies. Marvel Studios still has three dates for unтιтled movies in 2028: February 18, May 5, and November 10.
What Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars’ Delays Mean
The MCU Is Making Some Big Changes To How It Develops Projects
The Multiverse Saga has been a rocky one for the MCU. With the creation of Disney+, Marvel Studios quickly started to release an elevated number of projects in a short span of time, adding movies, TV shows, Special Presentations, and more to the MCU. That led to quite a few projects underperforming at the box office or not landing well with critics and/or fans. Marvel has since made moves to fix those issues, cutting the number of movies and series that will be released every year and giving projects longer development pipelines.
Avengers: Doomsday began filming in April 2025. Production is expected to last six months, which would then have led to a short window for VFX artists if the movie was to meet its original May 2026 release date. With Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars being delayed, Marvel Studios gives more time to get the VFX-heavy movies to the high level they need to be. It also gives Marvel time to lock in deals with actors yet to be announced for Avengers: Doomsday, like Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Tom Holland and Wolverine star Hugh Jackman.
Our Take On Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars’ Delays
The MCU’s Biggest Events Have Been Pushed Back For Good Reasons
I’m mixed on the delays. On the one hand, I’m disappointed because we haven’t had an Avengers movie since 2019’s Endgame, and we will now have to wait even longer for Avengers: Doomsday. On the other hand, I feel like this is for the best. I want the next Avengers movies to be as epic as they should be, and if Marvel needs more time to get them right, then that is more than worth it. Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars have to be the perfect ending to an uneven saga, and the delays can help them achieve that.
