Sinners Is Only $35 Million Away From Breaking Into A Box Office Top 10 That Includes Only One Horror Movie

Ryan Coogler’s action-packed horror movie, Sinners, continues to find record-breaking success in theaters, making it among the year’s most widely discussed films. Thanks to positive reviews from critics and audiences, popular cast members like Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, and Coogler’s prestige as the director of Black Panther and Creed, Sinners reportedly made $322 million in theaters (via The Numbers). Thus, this hit vampire blockbuster has succeeded in becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of 2025 so far. However, as a profitable R-rated movie, Sinners could soon reach another milestone at the domestic box office weeks after its premiere.

Sinners is close to reaching the top 10 list of the highest-grossing R-rated movies at the domestic box office. Though it still needs to gross quite a lot before achieving this goal, Sinners still has about a couple of weeks left in its theatrical run, and many moviegoers still seem to be watching it. Based on the film’s latest profits and the rate at which they’re changing, Sinners has a great chance of becoming one of the ten most profitable R-rated movies in domestic cinemas before it’s available at home.

Sinners Needs To Beat The First Two Hangover Movies At The Domestic Box Office To Hit The Top 10

As a film filled with heart-pounding action, horror, romance, and music, Sinners has shone at the domestic box office since its release on April 18, 2025. Coogler’s movie is currently the 12th highest-grossing R-rated film at the domestic box office, having grossed over $246 million so far. This puts two other hard-partying films, The Hangover and The Hangover Part II, between Sinners and the top 10 list. In particular, the first Hangover movie currently sits at the No. 10 spot on the list with around $277 million in domestic revenue.

11

12

Sinners (2025)

$246,404,014

To overtake both of the Hangover films and reach the top 10 list, Sinners will have to make roughly another $31 million in domestic theaters. This is quite a challenge for an original film, especially given how much time the film has left in theaters. Even if the film doesn’t beat The Hangover‘s record, the second Hangover movie will be easier to top at the domestic box office, given that Sinners is about $10 million from becoming the 11th highest-grossing domestic R-rated film on the list.

Sinners Will Be The Second Horror Movie In The Domestic Top 10 R-Rated Movies

Sinners May Join A Hit Stephen King Film In The Top 10 List

As an R-rated horror movie, Sinners has already made incredible strides at the domestic box office. Specifically, Coogler’s film has usurped the domestic gross of 1973’s The Exorcist, one of the most iconic scary movies ever made, by over $13 million. It also left popular, high-grossing horror movies like Get Out, Us, and It: Chapter Two in the dust farther down the list. Should Sinners garner enough money in theaters, it will be the second horror movie in the top 10 list of highest-grossing R-rated movies at the domestic box office.

The only other horror movie in the top 10 list is director Andy Muschietti’s 2017 blockbuster, It. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is also in the top 10 and has been described by some, including Nolan himself, as a horror movie. Despite that, the King adaptation with the shape-shifting, child-eating clown is the only other true horror movie, given its more traditional approach to the genre. Either way, should Sinners beat It‘s record, the odds of Coogler’s film beating Oppenheimer’s record are also high, given the latter made almost $2 million more than It with about $330 million domestically.

Will Sinners Become One Of The Top 10 R-Rated Movies At The Domestic Box Office?

Sinners Weekly Gross And Steady Decline Give It A Chance At The Top 10 Before It Hits PVOD

While Sinners can become one of the ten most profitable R-rated films domestically, it’s unknown how high up the list it will soar before it leaves theaters. The vampire movie is scheduled to drop on PVOD on June 3, so the film will have another two weeks left in cinemas. Within that time, it’s unlikely it will take ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s spot at the top of the list, as that would require almost another $400 million in about two weeks. Likewise, to beat It’s domestic gross and become the most profitable horror movie on the list, it would have to make roughly another $85 million in theaters.

However, it is more likely that Sinners will take The Matrix Reloaded‘s spot as the 9th highest-grossing R-rated film on the list, given that this sci-fi film made around $281.5 million in domestic theaters. The other films on the list, excluding ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, have grossed somewhere between $324 million and $370 million, which is a steep slope for Sinners to climb at this point.

Sinners Weekly Decline Has Been Impressive Despite New Releases

This Rate Will Likely Continue Even With Lilo & Sтιтch & Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

While it has been over a month since its theatrical release, Coogler’s film seems to be staying strong at the domestic box office. Recently, Sinners reportedly made about $32 million in theaters domestically. So far, Sinners has already made at least $15 million in the U.S. since May 16. Also, statistics have shown that, since May 2, Sinners‘s weekly domestic gross has declined by about 30% each week.

Memorial Day could give Coogler’s film an extra boost in revenue should enough people in the U.S. choose to spend their holiday watching Sinners at the theater.

At this rate, the film could make another $7 million domestically in theaters for a total of about $22 million. It’s worth noting that Lilo & Sтιтch and Misson: Impossible – The Final Reckoning are projected to make a mᴀssive combined total of nearly $200 million during Memorial Day Weekend. Should the weekly gross decline by another 30%, Sinners could make another $15.7 million the following week. This leaves three more days to make another $7-8 million for the top 10 list. Memorial Day could give Coogler’s film an extra boost in revenue should enough people choose to spend their holiday watching Sinners at the theater.

Overall, Sinners has defied expectations in theaters as an original R-rated horror movie. While Coogler may not gross the astronomical amount gained by his last two Black Panther films, his epic vampire film has become a success in its own right. With the way it continues to make money in theaters, it could still break another domestic box office record in theaters, further cementing its reputation as one of 2025’s best films.
