I Need One DC Actor’s Story Hope For The Batman 2 To Become A Reality

One DC actor has one big hope for The Batman – Part II, and I’m certainly hoping it comes true. Released in 2022, Matt Reeves’ The Batman debuted Robert Pattinson as a brand-new version of The Dark Knight early in his vigilante career. However, Andy Serkis is hoping for some greater exploration into Alfred Pennyworth’s relationship with Bruce Wayne in this version of Gotham (flaws and all).

Unfortunately, numerous delays have meant that The Batman – Part II will not be released until 2027, almost five years after the first movie’s release. This means that very few actors from the first movie haven’t yet seen the script for the upcoming sequel. However, that hasn’t stopped Andy Serkis from making known his sequel hopes for Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman – Part II.

Andy Serkis Has One Big Hope For Alfred in The Batman – Part II

Exploring The Unique (And Flawed) Dynamic Between Alfred and Bruce

While speaking at Fan Expo Philadelphia 2025 with Screen Rant’s Joe Deckelmeier, actor and director Andy Serkis shared his hope that the parental dynamics (or lack thereof) between Alfred and Bruce Wayne are explored to a greater degree in The Batman – Part II:

“What I loved about what Matt [Reeves] created in the last one was this sense of a guardian who has not an iota of paternal instinct him, trying to be a father he could never be. And that was really at the core of their relationship. He really felt he had failed the one person that he adores and tries to look after. He knows how to help him in terms of skills and in terms of cracking cones, and how to fight, and all of those things from being a soldier, from being in the military in his past.

But the one thing that he fails to do is to have a real proper paternal feeling for him. And I would like to see the exploration of that deeply and go further. I mean, I don’t know anything about the story or where Matt’s taking him, but I would love to see that taken to the extreme, but in a more extreme situation.”

Rather than knowing anything concrete about what’s coming in The Batman – Part II, Andy Serkis is simply hoping that the flawed dynamics between Alfred and Batman will be further explored. While we know Alfred legally adopted Bruce and became his legal guardian after the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne, Alfred was ill-equipped to be a father to Bruce. However, he still taught Bruce what he knew, teaching the young man martial arts and how to protect himself as one of The Dark Knight’s first teachers.

How Alfred’s History In The Batman Has Mirrored The Comics

Particularly Batman: Earth One

Split image of Alfred in The Batman and Earth One

Much of the history and characterization of The Batman’s Alfred Pennyworth seems to have come from DC’s Batman: Earth One graphic novel. In Batman: Earth One, Alfred was a member of the Royal Marines who saved Thomas Wayne’s life during a tour in the Middle East, and the two became friends. Following the death of the Waynes, Alfred became Bruce’s legal guardian, similarly training and teaching him how to fight and protect himself using his skills from the military.

To that end, there are references in The Batman to Alfred’s service in the military, particularly when Alfred mentions his time in “The Circus”, a term used for British Intelligence. As such, Alfred becomes a key ᴀsset as Bruce works to decode the ciphers and riddles left by Edward Nashton’s Riddler, while also speaking to the idea that Alfred also trained Bruce, much like Earth One’s Pennyworth in the comics. While differences between the depictions exist, the core idea that Alfred was more equipped to train and raise a soldier than he was a son runs through both stories.

Regardless, Andy Serkis’ Alfred Needs A Bigger Role in The Batman – Part II

Alfred Should Take A More Active Role in Batman’s Crusade

The batman Alfred not being Bruce Father figure great choice

With any luck, Andy Serkis will get his wish and the relationship between Pennyworth and Bruce Wayne will be explored even further in The Batman – Part II. Even if the sequel doesn’t delve into their history and flawed paternal dynamics to the degree Serkis hopes, one would ᴀssume that Alfred will be taking more of a active role in The Dark Knight’s crusade. After all, one can imagine Alfred might be more inclined to help now that it’s evolved, becoming more about justice and helping Gotham’s innocents, rather than being motivated by vengeance alone.
