Sinners Hits Major Box Office Milestone, & It’s Quickly Climbing Multiple Highest-Grossing Movie Charts In Week 5

Sinners crosses another major box office milestone, securing a seat as one of the highest-grossing movies in several categories. The Ryan Coogler-directed supernatural horror has multiplied its $90 production budget in a little over a month, making waves at the box office. Headlined by Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, the Sinners cast includes Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Saul Williams, Andrene Ward-Hammond, and many more.

Per The Numbers, Sinners has surpᴀssed $320 million at the global box office, with $244 million from the domestic box office, securing spots on several highest-grossing all-time charts. It’s currently no. 9 on the all-time global box office for horror movies, recently surpᴀssing The Conjuring, and no. 72 on the all-time worldwide box office for R movies.

What Sinners’ Box Office Milestone Means For The Genre

Sinners Could Continue Climbing The Chart

The top spaces on the all-time global horror chart are occupied by It at $701 million and Jaws at $484 million. However, the new Cooglar movie is only $14 million from surpᴀssing A Quiet Place to claim the no. 8 spot and $30 million from Hannibal at no. 7. Similarly, Sinners also has a great chance at an even better placement at the all-time worldwide box office for R movies. The boost in box office is likely connected to its IMAX re-release from May 15 to May 21.

Sinners has achieved global success, but it was an even bigger hit at the domestic box office. The supernatural horror is currently the 12th highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time domestically, right behind The Hangover Part II, which grossed $254 million during its theatrical run. The top of the chart is occupied by ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s $636 million earnings. It also sits at no. 3 on the all-time domestic horror chart below Jaws‘ $273 million, and It‘s $328 million.

Our Take On Sinners’ Box Office Success

It’s Rare And Significant

It’s not entirely certain how long the movie will stay in theaters, but movies that perform well at the box office tend to have a longer theatrical run, which means that the movie might continue to climb the charts in the coming days and weeks. Sinners is expected to arrive on digital streaming via video on demand on June 3 and on HBO Max’s streaming platform in early July.

While this does slightly affect the movie’s near-future box office performance, Coogler’s highly-rated supernatural horror has already secured itself as one of the highest-grossing R-rated and horror movies and has also left its mark on live-action, historical fiction, and even in Warner Bros.’ history, a rarity for an original screenplay.
