As The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping‘s cast continues to take shape, prospective audiences just got a popular fancast in a key role. Based on the book of the same name and expected in November 2026, Sunrise on the Reaping follows 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy as he is forced to participate in the 50th Hunger Games, 24 years before the events of the original Hunger Games trilogy. Sunrise on the Reaping‘s cast so far includes Joseph Zada as Haymitch, Mckenna Grace as fellow tribute Maysilee Donner, and Whitney Peak as Haymitch’s girlfriend Lenore Dove Baird.
However, this prequel is following the old movies’ tradition of casting major veteran stars in the adult roles, and Sunrise on the Reaping includes many returning characters, now to be played by younger actors. Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee is a perfect casting choice, while Ralph Fiennes as President Snow surprised some, but will also be a performance to remember. Now, the most recent casting announcement is for the fan-favorite character of Effie Trinket, who is being played by a beloved star that many people were hoping would take on the role.

Sunrise on the Reaping included many surprises when characters we already knew reentered the story as their younger selves, one of whom is Effie, who acts as Katniss and Peeta’s escort throughout their time as tributes and victors. Per the announcement from the official Hunger Games X account, Elle Fanning will be playing Effie in Sunrise on the Reaping, replacing Elizabeth Banks from the previous movies. Effie is probably in her late 20s or early 30s in the prequel, aligning with Fanning’s real age.
Fanning also has some experience with aspects of dark comedy, which will serve her well in the role of Effie.
Fanning is known for a variety of dramatic roles, most notably Princess Aurora in the live-action Maleficent movies. She also recently starred in the Best Picture-nominated biopic A Complete Unknown as Sylvie Russo, a fictionalized version of Bob Dylan’s ex-girlfriend. Fanning also has some experience with aspects of dark comedy, which will serve her well in the role of Effie, a character who is somewhat amusing in her cluelessness and superficiality despite the grave story she is a part of.
Elle Fanning Was A Popular Fancasting For Effie, Especially After Rumors
People Were Excited When It First Surfaced That Fanning COULD Play Effie
Fanning was rumored to be in talks to play Effie before this confirmation, as was Jesse Plemons before his official casting as Plutarch was announced. While some early rumors do not play out, since these did, we might consider that Kieran Culkin will end up portraying Hunger Games master of ceremonies Caesar Flickerman (his casting is not confirmed at the time of writing). While Fanning was suggested by fans to play a young Effie, this fancast was further fueled by the legitimate rumors that she could actually end up with the part.
Fanning’s varied experience, as well as her ᴀssociation with some major blockbusters and her reasonable resemblance to Elizabeth Banks, were all reasons for fans to want to see her portray Effie. The character walks the line between being sympathetic and endearing to audiences and being unlikable when she at least begins the story as a dedicated supporter of the Hunger Games and prioritizes her career over the children about to be killed. The Maleficent star’s fans are now getting what they want in seeing her take on this complex, bombastic role, which is sure to involve some showstopping costumes.
Elizabeth Banks Shared Her Reaction To Elle Fanning’s Casting As Effie
Banks Show’s Support For The Hunger Games’ New Effie
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Banks took the time to congratulate Fanning on her casting via Instagram. Banks played Effie in the four Hunger Games movies released from 2012 to 2015, and certainly captured the kooky, spoiled energy Effie is known for. She also delivered some very compelling scenes that show Effie coming to realize the injustice of the Hunger Games as Katniss and Peeta endure further trauma with their victory tour and then the third Quarter Quell. Effie’s role in the last two movies was also expanded, at least partially due to Banks making her such an oddly popular character.
Effie largely disappears in the Mockingjay novel, as she is presumably under some form of arrest in the Capitol for her ᴀssociation with Katniss. However, Effie does not appear to have been hurt by her captors, as she and Katniss reunite after the Capitol’s fall, and she goes right back to her routine of overseeing Katniss’ public appearances, her personality unchanged. In the movie, Effie is present in District 13 the whole time Katniss lives there, due to Plutarch’s (Philip Seymour Hoffman) intervention. Banks supporting the star stepping into her shoes is extra special, showing faith in Fanning’s abilities to live up to the role.
The Casting Is Exciting As It Sets Up A Reunion Between Effie & Haymitch
Effie & Haymitch Have A Complex Relationship
Effie has an interesting and layered role to play in Sunrise on the Reaping, which depicts how she and Haymitch meet. While he is a tribute, a member of Haymitch’s prep team is actually Effie’s younger sister, who calls Effie to tell her about things falling apart when District 12’s stylist doesn’t show up to dress them. In a wild plot twist and a very grand entrance, Effie shows up to save the day, with makeup bags and old family evening clothes in hand to make sure the District 12 tributes are dressed to the nines for their interviews.
However, Effie also makes a comment about how she thinks the Hunger Games are necessary, a kind of introspection she doesn’t really show in the other installments.
Very true to how she comes across in the original books, Effie oddly bonds with the tributes, despite her complicity in their deaths. Haymitch makes an impression on Effie with his kindness, and she and Maysilee are absolutely on the same page when they talk about makeup. However, Effie also makes a comment about how she thinks the Hunger Games are necessary, a kind of introspection she doesn’t really show in the other installments. She later tries to care for Haymitch and keep him sober during his victory tour, although she doesn’t achieve much.
In later years, Haymitch and Effie become something of a team in managing and protecting Katniss and Peeta, the pair who changed both their lives. The tributes of the 74th Hunger Games have a similar effect on both their reclusive mentor and self-involved escort, giving them something real to care about and fight for, and forcing them to reevaluate their actions. As such, Elle Fanning and Joseph Zada’s scenes together and how they nod to the future are sure to be a fascinating part of Sunrise on the Reaping, alongside their interactions with the rest of the star-studded cast.
