Jokes are often made at Ron Weasley’s expense for being the most underwhelming member of Harry Potter‘s golden trio but that’s kind of unfair and diminishes what Ron brought to the table. Harry was the Chosen One and was good at defensive magic, while Hermione is typically viewed as the team’s MVP given her wits, brilliance, and creative use of spells to their advantage. While Ron didn’t quite have those skills, he was useful in other ways.
Ron was important from day one on the Hogwarts Express, showing Harry kindness and cementing their bond. They had their ups and downs, especially when Ron leaves the trio during the events of The Deathly Hallows Part 1, it’s his loyalty that shines through. Ron is also mostly viewed as comedic relief, and though that’s not viewed the same as things like defensive magic or wits, it’s something the trio often needed in times of crisis.
Ron’s Knowledge Of The Wizarding World Was Often Crucial
He Had Experience That Harry & Hermione Couldn’t Match
One area where Ron could help in ways that Harry and Hermione couldn’t was with his vast knowledge of how the Wizarding World works. Hermione is a Muggle-born witch while Harry was raised by Muggles, meaning there are everyday things that Ron knows about that they don’t. Simple things like knowing about common magical creatures or how parts of the Ministry of Magic work are things his friends were sometimes unaware of.
Without Ron’s expertise at Wizards’ chess, the trio likely wouldn’t have stopped Voldemort in Quirrell during their first year at Hogwarts.
In the hunt for Horcruxes, the trio came upon Xenophilius Lovegood and when he mentioned The Tales of Beedle the Bard and The Tale of the Three Brothers, Ron was aware of these stories as he heard them growing up. Hermione certainly read up on everything she could but Ron had real-world experience that couldn’t be matched. Without Ron’s expertise at Wizards’ chess, the trio likely wouldn’t have stopped Voldemort in Quirrell during their first year at Hogwarts.
Ron Weasley’s Family Saved Harry Potter’s Main Trio Many Times
Charlie, Bill, The Twins, And More All Came To Harry’s Aid
Even more important than being a help to Harry himself, Ron had connections that proved invaluable. For starters, the entire Weasley family, especially Arthur and Molly, took Harry and Hermione in as members of their own. That allowed The Burrow to become a safehouse for them, with all sorts of enchantments and protections placed on it. Nearly every member of the Weasley family also saved or ᴀssisted Harry in some crucial way over the years.
Ginny joined the trio and other Dumbledore’s Army members as they fought Death Eaters in The Order of the Phoenix, despite not having much experience in that kind of situation. Fred and George were also members of the DA and they provided Harry with the Marauders’ Map that he considered a prized possession. Bill Weasley housed the trio after they escaped Malfoy Manor and both he and Fleur took part in the Seven Potters plan.
Percy, the Weasley Harry admits he likes the least, also managed to show up for the Battle of Hogwarts.
The lesser-seen Weasleys also helped Harry. Charlie is the Weasley sibling we see in the series, yet even he was there for Harry, helping to take Norbert off their hands and providing important information ahead of the First Task during the Triwizard Tournament. Percy, the Weasley Harry admits he likes the least, also managed to show up for the Battle of Hogwarts. All these Weasley family members helped Harry immensely, proving how valuable Ron was to the Golden Trio.
