Suicide Squad Star Teases Possible Return In James Gunn’s DCU

Almost four years after his character was killed off onscreen, Jai Courtney addressed the possibility of reprising his role as Captain Boomerang in James Gunn’s DCU. The actor originated this role in 2016’s Suicide Squad, alongside a star-studded cast of Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Scott Eastwoord, Cara Delevingne, and Viola Davis. Courtney was one of the few actors to return for its 2021 sequel, The Suicide Squad, which was directed by Gunn. Kinnaman, Robbie, and Davis all also reprised their parts. In a wild plot twist, Captain Boomerang was killed off as part of the film’s opening bloodbath.

According to Comic Book Resources, Courtney was initially upset to learn that his character would die so early on in The Suicide Squad. However, Gunn reᴀssured the star that Captain Boomerang may return to the big screen one day. The actor explained:

“I was like, ‘Come on, man. Boomerang is cool.’ James is like, ‘You know these rules don’t really apply. Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s gone forever, right?’ And I was like, ‘Hell yeah.'”

Courtney maintains hope as a result of Gunn’s encouraging words. He concluded by saying: “Somewhere in the back of my mind, there’s a prayer that we’ll see more of Boomerang one day.

What Jai Courtney’s Comments About Captain Boomerang Mean

James Gunn’s DCU Shares Some Continuity With The Suicide Squad

Over the past few years, Courtney has been very clear about his openness to play Captain Boomerang again. The actor previously stated: “just waiting on the call from Warner Brothers; I mean, if they want me to throw that jacket on again. I’ll be more than happy to oblige.” Before that, he teased the possibility of a Captain Boomerang spin-off, quipping that “a boomerang always comes back.” As such, it’s no surprise to hear that Courtney is still interested in rejoining the DCU.

Despite the DCU rebooting the DC Extended Universe and recasting many major roles, there are a few actors who are remaining in their parts. Chiefly, John Cena, Viola Davis, and the rest of the Peacemaker cast are crossing over from the previous franchise into the rebooted one. Given that Courtney shared the screen with Cena’s Peacemaker, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he could make the leap as well.

However, there is one simple issue: his character met a pretty gruesome ending in The Suicide Squad. Even so, comic books are no stranger to resurrections or multiversal variants, and Courtney could be brought back by one of these means.

The DCU Is A Fresh Start, But It Does Borrow DCEU Stars

Captain Boomerang in Suicide Squad

While the DCU is primarily casting new actors, Gunn’s choice to keep some of the performers from the DCEU means that Courtney could come back as Captain Boomerang. This likelihood is heightened by his character having been in a Gunn-directed film before. The difficult part would be handwaving his death in The Suicide Squad. Still, since the DCU is presumably in a different timeline, Courtney could reprise the role with the explanation as to why simply being that he looks the same as his DCEU alternate.
