2025 has been an up and down year for the family movie. On the one hand, the year’s no. 2 highest-grossing movie (and no. 1 best Hollywood release) is the PG-rated video game adaptation A Minecraft Movie, which has grossed over $416 million domestically and $921 million worldwide. The Biblically-based animated movie The King of Kings has also done incredibly well for a film in its subgenre, making $65.7 million worldwide following its April 11 release.
That said, this year has already brought one glaring underperformance in the family film realm with Disney’s live-action Snow White. Though it is the no. 6 highest-grossing movie of the year so far, the film has only made $204 million, which pales in comparison to its estimated $240 million+ budget. Before its release, a franchise-based family movie was released in the United States in February. That film just recently came to streaming, where it is now getting a new life as it became an instant hit.
Paddington In Peru Is Now A Netflix Hit
The Movie Had The Lowest Gross In The Paddington Franchise
Paddington in Peru has now become a hit on Netflix. The movie is the third in the Paddington franchise, which began in 2014. This threequel sees the Brown family on another adventure with their adoptive bear son, this time heading all the way to Peru to see Paddington’s Aunt Lucy. The film ended up making $168.7 million in theaters, which was the lowest for any movie in the franchise. That said, Paddington in Peru still got strong reviews overall, getting a 93% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes.
In his review of Paddington in Peru, ScreenRant‘s Simon Gallagher gave the movie 8 out of 10 stars, noting that the movie is “a fun, pleasantly charming family experience.”
As per FlixPatrol, Paddington in Peru is now a Netflix hit. The movie ranks no. 4 in the top 10 movies in the United States today, May 19. This comes after the film debuted on the platform on May 15. Since May 16, the day following its debut, the Paddington film has consistently maintained top 5 status on the Netflix movies charts. Today, it joins a list that also includes Nonnas, Instant Family, A ᴅᴇᴀᴅly American Marriage, I Still Believe, Home, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Untold: The Liver King, Despicable Me 4, and Twilight.
What This Means For The Paddington Franchise
These Movies Still Have A Significant Audience
Paddington in Peru had a high bar to meet when it hit theaters in the UK late last year and in the United States early this year. The second film in the family movie franchise was beloved, with strong reviews and box office. In comparison, the response to Paddington in Peru was far more tepid. That said, the movie’s persistence on the Netflix charts shows that Paddington in Peru still has a significant audience base, and is a worthy entry within the franchise.
