Did Final Destination Bloodlines Just Retcon The Whole Franchise? Skyview Survivors Theory Addressed By Directors

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Final Destination Bloodlines.Exclusive: Final Destination Bloodlines directors address the Skyview survivor theory, which links Death’s victims in the previous films to being the descendants of the Skyview survivors. Following Stefanie’s (Kaitlyn Santa Juana) attempt to save her family from Death’s sinister plans, the sixth installment, which arrived in theaters on May 16, reveals a mᴀssive map of Death’s past victims, consisting of countless Skyview survivors and their descendants, who were saved by Stefanie’s grandmother, Iris (Brec Bᴀssinger/Gabrielle Rose).

In an interview with Screen Rant, directors Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky share their thoughts on the Skyview survivor theory. While Stein admits that they have “discussed and debated a lot” about the idea, they actually “didn’t go quite that far” because one of the rules in the sixth installment established that the previous generation would be targeted first, which means including the theory would easily break canon. Check out what they said:

Stein: Well, that’s something we discussed and debated a lot.

Lipovsky: Because that would be so juicy.

Stein: We didn’t go quite that far, only because it meant that their parents had to have died before they died.

Lipovsky: Which you don’t see in the previous movies. So, we didn’t want to break that piece of the canon. So, that’s why we kept everyone who dies in our movie contained within just the Skyview.

Stein: But Iris’ book does do research on all those other movies, on all those other accidents and premonitions, because she knows they had premonitions, and she’s researching it to figure out what she can find out, if there’s a way out of Death. We didn’t go quite that far, because of that canon-breaking thing in FD 2 and FD 3, you meet parents who are still alive. That’s a tricky part about that.

What This Means For Final Destination Bloodlines

The Directors Have Debunked Skyview Survivor Theory

Despite being a very interesting concept, sadly, the Skyview survivor theory is debunked, which makes Final Destination Bloodlines one of Death’s plans, similar to the previous films. Only this time, it explores a scenario where Iris, the prophet, manages to save everyone from the catastrophe, instead of only a handful.

The latest entry made some deliberate choices about what to include as Final Destination Easter eggs and what to exclude. While Flight 180 is in Iris’ journal, the film’s credits, which trace Death’s coin down the Skyview bloodlines, make it clear that the incident isn’t responsible for starting the previous cycles. On the other hand, the movie was able to finally address Tony Todd’s JB’s backstory and how he was involved in Death’s plan.

Our Take On Skyview Survivor Theory

It Would Have Been Problematic, But Mind-Blowing

The Skyview survivor theory sounds very intriguing, and it’d grandly elevate the movie if it were adapted, but then, it’d create a loophole in the franchise. The directors’ choice to make Skyview a separate cycle-starter offers a look at Death’s plan on a much larger scale, and at the same time, softly sets up a sequel. However, it’s also worth noting that, currently, there’s no plan for Final Destination 7, and the movie also doesn’t feature a post or mid-credits scene.

While it’s slightly disappointing that the highly-rated Final Destination Bloodlines steered clear of exploring the origin, it does make the franchise much darker and more tragic than fans imagined. It seems that Death not only creates catastrophes, but he also takes extreme measures to correct the course of his plan should it go south.
