The Weeknd’s Thriller Movie With 13% RT On Track For Box Office Failure After Underwhelming Debut

The poorly reviewed new thriller movie starring The Weeknd is on track for a disappointing theatrical run. The musical artist, whose non-stage name is Abel Tesfaye, has won four Grammy Awards and earned six No. 1 hits, including “Can’t Feel My Face,” “Starboy,” “Save Your Tears,” and “Blinding Lights.” One of those hits, “Earned It,” was released as part of the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack and earned the star an Oscar nomination, though he lost to Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes for the song “Writing’s on the Wall” from Spectre.

In recent years, Tesfaye has been increasingly exploring the world of film and television. In addition to appearing as himself in the Adam Sandler thriller Uncut Gems in 2019, he has voiced characters in The Simpsons and American Dad!, similarly playing himself in the latter series. His most notable onscreen contribution is the HBO drama The Idol, which he co-created with Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim and in which he starred opposite Lily-Rose Depp. The series was cancelled after one five-episode season, though it did win a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming.

Hurry Up Tomorrow Is Set For An Underwhelming Debut

The Weeknd Stars As A Version Of Himself

Hurry Up Tomorrow may end up becoming a box office failure. The new thriller movie, which is inspired by the Weeknd album of the same name, stars Tesfaye alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan and follows a fictionalized version of the artist being plunged into a surreal nightmare. Ahead of its debut, critics rejected the movie, giving it a dismal 13% Rotten Tomatoes score. The Hurry Up Tomorrow release kicked off on the same weekend as Final Destination Bloodlines, a horror sequel that is projected to topple Marvel’s Thunderbolts* from its position at No. 1 at the domestic box office.

Final Destination Bloodlines‘ anticipated $46 million debut weekend is by far the best of the long-running horror franchise.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, as of Saturday morning, Hurry Up Tomorrow is projected to earn a 3-day opening weekend gross between $3 and $3.6 million at the domestic box office, debuting at No. 6. This will see it earning back just over a fifth of its reported budget of $15 million. Because movies generally need to earn back two and a half times their budgets in order to turn a profit in theaters, this means that its estimated break-even point could be as high as $37.5 million, which is a total that it seems highly unlikely to reach given this inauspicious start.

What This Means For Hurry Up Tomorrow

It Probably Won’t Break Even

Jenna Ortega looks stunned in Hurry Up Tomorrow

While audiences disagree with critics’ Hurry Up Tomorrow reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, giving it a Popcornmeter score of 72%, this may not boost its box office performance, particularly because it received a disappointing CinemaScore of C-. A superior B- score didn’t help Ortega’s previous theatrical release, Death of a Unicorn, which only grossed $16.1 million against its reported $15 million budget. Given the fact that Unicorn was at the same budget level and had a significantly better opening weekend with $5.8 million, prospects are not looking good for Tesfaye’s newest film project.
