Box Office (Sunday Update): Final Destination Bloodlines’ Record-Shattering Debut Knocks Thunderbolts* From No. 1

Final Destination Bloodlines Now Tracking Above $50 Million, Even Higher Than Expected

This article was originally written Saturday AM and has been updated Sunday AM with up-to-date box office projections (in bold), a full chart, and further analysis.

Final Destination Bloodlines is set for a stupendous opening weekend. The new horror movie is the sixth installment in the Final Destination franchise, which follows Death itself tracking down victims who have previously escaped its clutches by murdering them in outlandish and violent ways. The movie, which follows a family being targeted by Death and stars Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones, Anna Lore, Brec Bᴀssinger, and Tony Todd, has earned the best Rotten Tomatoes score in the entire franchise, with its Certified Fresh 92% score far exceeding the previous high, which was the 63% earned by 2011’s Final Destination 5.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Final Destination Bloodlines is projected to close out its opening weekend with a 3-day total of $51 million at the domestic box office. In addition to coming in above its original projected range of $31 to $38 million and earning the best opening weekend of the entire franchise by far, it has easily knocked Marvel’s Thunderbolts* from its perch at No. 1, which the superhero movie has held for two consecutive weekends since it opened on May 2.

Meanwhile, in its third weekend, Thunderbolts* is neck and neck for No. 2 with the fifth weekend of the Ryan Coogler horror movie Sinners, a runaway hit that has already grossed more than $200 million in North America. The former is projected to hit roughly $16.5 million while the latter is likely going to make $15.4 million, reducing Sinners‘ chances of taking No. 2. However, it took No. 1 over Thunderbolts* for the first time ever at the domestic box office on Thursday, so anything is possible. See the full domestic Top 5 chart for the weekend below:

#

тιтle

3-Day Total

Cumulative (Domestic)

1

Final Destination Bloodlines

$51 million

$51 million (weekend 1)

2

Thunderbolts*

$16.5 million

$155.4 million (weekend 3)

3

Sinners

$15.4 million

$240.8 million (weekend 5)

4

A Minecraft Movie

$5.9 million

$416 million (weekend 7)

5

The Accountant 2

$4.9 million

$59.1 million (weekend 4)

Final Destination Bloodlines has slotted in neatly at the top of the chart. With Thunderbolts* seeming to have won the neck-and-neck skirmish with Sinners in which it was locked on Saturday, this means that the previous weekend’s Top 4 тιтles – a roster that also includes A Minecraft Movie (the third Warner Bros. movie on the chart after Final Destination and Sinners) and The Accountant 2 – have all moved down one slot apiece.

With one new release in the Top 5, only one тιтle has exited, namely the young adult slasher adaptation Clown in a Cornfield, which has slipped from No. 5 to No. 7. The movie is set to hit a cumulative domestic gross of more than $6 million, which is more than six times its reported budget of less than $1 million.

The weekend’s other major new release, Hurry Up Tomorrow, has not fared as well as Final Destination Bloodlines. The surreal odyssey, which stars Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and is based on his album of the same name, is set to debut at No. 6 with a 3-day total of $3.3 million. Even though it has a relatively slim reported budget of $15 million, it currently seems unlikely to earn that back in theaters, though distributor Lionsgate is not on the hook for that entire total.

What This Means For Final Destination Bloodlines

It Could Quickly Become The Highest-Grossing Installment

Not only has the Final Destination Bloodlines release kicked off with the best opening weekend of the franchise, it is set to earn almost double the franchise’s previous highest debut, which was the $27.4 million earned by the fourth installment, 2009’s The Final Destination. This is especially impressive because the movie was released in 3D, which increases ticket prices. However when adjusted for inflation, the 2009 movie draws much nearer with $40.7 million. Below, see a breakdown of the opening weekends of every previous installment, and how much they ended up making worldwide by the end of their runs:

тιтle

Domestic Debut

Worldwide Box Office

Final Destination (2000)

$10 million

$112 million

Final Destination 2 (2003)

$16 million

$90.4 million

Final Destination 3 (2006)

$19.2 million

$112.8 million

The Final Destination (2009)

$27.4 million

$187.4 million

Final Destination 5 (2011)

$18 million

$155 million

While horror generally has harsh sophomore weekend drops of 50% or more that could see Bloodlines quickly collapse, it is currently on a trajectory to earn more than $300 million worldwide if it follows the precedent set by the previous installments. This would make it the highest-grossing movie in the franchise by a long sH๏τ and earn back more than six times its reported $50 million budget. However, it could potentially grow even higher if those glowing Final Destination Bloodlines reviews translate to a similar amount of audience enthusiasm for the movie and it manages the rare stellar sophomore weekend.

Our Take On The Weekend Box Office

The End Of May Is Looking Great For Domestic Theaters

The stellar debut of Final Destination Bloodlines has compounded with the ongoing success of A Minecraft Movie and Sinners, as well as the slow-and-steady rise of Thunderbolts*, to make for a solid end of the month after the domestic box office has struggled to draw audiences to theaters on and off throughout the spring of 2025. This positive trend looks set to continue, because Memorial Day weekend could also see multiple records broken with the simultaneous release of the live-action Lilo & Sтιтch remake and the action sequel Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
