Fantastic Four Star Ioan Gruffudd Addresses Whether He Is Returning As Mister Fantastic In Avengers: Doomsday

Ioan Gruffudd has commented on his chances of coming back as Reed Richards in Avengers: Doomsday and future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, and the actor would not turn down the opportunity. Gruffudd gave life to Reed in two Fantastic Four movies, working alongside MCU star Chris Evans in the first theatrical iteration of the team. Now, The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ cast includes Pedro Pascal as the MCU’s Mister Fantastic. Despite that, the multiverse allows for past Fantastic Four movie stars to come back in the MCU, and Gruffudd answers if that means he is returning in Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast.

A video shared by @kylo_hd659 on TikTok shows Ioan Gruffud confirming he will not appear as Reed Richards in Avengers: Doomsday.

While the actor claimed to the fan that his Mister Fantastic would not be in the anticipated MCU movie, Gruffudd did give fans some hope that could change for future releases. According to the Fantastic Four franchise star, he would be game to come back as Mister Fantastic, saying, “If they invited me… In a heartbeat.” However, for the time being, Marvel Studios has not invited Gruffudd to return for Avengers: Doomsday‘s story or another MCU event.

What Ioan Gruffudd’s Avengers: Doomsday Reed Richards Return Comments Mean

The Fantastic Four Star Could Be Taking A Page Out Of The MCU Playbook

There are two ways in which Ioan Gruffudd’s Avengers: Doomsday comments could go. Either the actor is telling the truth, or he is purposefully lying to keep his Mister Fantastic return a secret. The latter has happened many times in the MCU. In the Multiverse Saga, Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man: No Way Home situation became the biggest example of the lengths MCU stars will go to in interviews to keep their roles a secret. While Gruffudd could be following a similar path to Garfield’s, the actor did sound genuine when saying he had not been invited to the Avengers movie.

As it stands, not many actors have read the script for Avengers: Doomsday. Based on that, it is entirely possible that multiverse cameos could be coming later in the filming process, thus giving more time for Marvel Studios to work out who to contact about returning. That way, Gruffudd’s Mister Fantastic could end up being in Avengers: Doomsday even though he has not received word of it yet. However, the most likely option is that Marvel does not plan to have him back for the Avengers movie. That said, his desire to return is exciting.

Our Take On Ioan Gruffudd’s Avengers: Doomsday Reed Richards Return Comments

Marvel Studios Has The Perfect Way To Bring His Reed Richards Back

Ioan Gruffudd's Mr. Fantastic and Michael Chiklis' The Thing fighting in Fantastic Four

I would love to see Ioan Gruffudd’s Reed Richards return. That said, I’m okay with him not being in Avengers: Doomsday. There will already be way too many teams in the film, which will have the task of establishing Sam Wilson’s Avengers, Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, and more. I believe that the 2000s Fantastic Four could repeat Fox’s X-Men’s feat and return in 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars instead. The multiverse also allows for Ioan Gruffudd, Miles Teller, and John Krasinski to return as Mister Fantastic variants for a Council of Reeds in the MCU, which would be exciting.
