“In 2025, It’s Nice To Say…”: Female James Bond Possibility Gets Honest Response From Die Another Day’s Halle Berry

Halle Berry has weighed in on whether James Bond should be played by a woman. Berry played a prominent role in 2002’s Die Another Day, in which Pierce Brosnan played the iconic MI6 agent. Berry’s Jinx is actually one of the most unique Bond girls since there were originally plans to develop a spinoff based on her character. While the Jinx spinoff was eventually canceled, Berry’s thoughts on a female James Bond are still worth considering ahead of the upcoming 26th movie in the long-running spy franchise.

In an interview with Variety during the jury press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, Berry admitted that she’s not sure if James Bond should be played by a woman. She didn’t elaborate that much, but suggested that casting a female to play James Bond might not be the right thing to do right now. She also added that she doesn’t think a Jinx spinoff will ever happen, seemingly confirming that she will never return to the James Bond franchise. Read Berry’s full comments and watch the clip below:

I don’t know if 007 really should be a woman. I mean, you know, in 2025 it’s nice to say ‘Oh, he should be a woman.’ But I don’t really know if I think that’s the right thing to do. And no, I doubt there will be a Jinx spinoff. There was a time that that could’ve happened and probably should have happened. I would’ve loved for that to happen. But I think that time has pᴀssed.

What Halle Berry’s Comments Mean For The Future Of The James Bond Franchise

A Female James Bond Seems Unlikely Right Now

Instead of pursuing a Jinx spinoff and more James Bond films starring Brosnan, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson instead decided to find a new 007 actor and start a fresh era after the critical failure of Die Another Day. Obviously, it was initially believed that Berry’s Bond girl warranted her own film, but Die Another Day unfortunately ended up being one of the lowest-rated films in the franchise. Daniel Craig ended up being cast as 007 for 2006’s Casino Royale, but fans of the franchise have always debated whether James Bond should ever be played by a woman.

There would probably be a lot of uproar if a woman were ever cast to play the iconic spy.

Ever since the franchise began, fans have been particular about who plays James Bond. Even Craig faced criticism when he was cast in the role. Therefore, there would probably be a lot of uproar if a woman were ever cast to play the iconic spy. In addition to Berry, another Bond girl also recently suggested that 007 should never be played by a woman. In an interview in December 2024, Gemma Arterton, who appeared in 2008’s Quantum of Solace, argued that “you just have to respect the tradition,” suggesting that a female James Bond might not be the best idea.

Our Take On Halle Berry’s Comments About A Female James Bond

Many James Bond Spinoffs Will Likely Be Made In The Coming Years

Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig as James Bond Next to a Question Mark

Following the announcement that Amazon now has full control of the James Bond franchise, it is still unknown who will play 007 in the upcoming Bond 26. However, it would definitely be very surprising if a woman was cast in the role. Even Broccoli, who inherited the franchise from her father, has claimed that she doesn’t think a woman should play James Bond.

I’m not opposed to the idea of a female 007, but since Amazon will likely develop a lot of James Bond spinoffs, I think it’s much more likely that a woman will lead a different movie or show in the franchise. While Berry’s Jinx spinoff never happened, perhaps a Moneypenny spinoff or a project following a different female MI6 agent will now be made. Therefore, now that these projects are possible, more fans may agree with Berry and may be less eager to see a female James Bond.
