Sinners Is Doing So Well At The Box Office It’s Broken A Major Ryan Coogler Record After 10 Years

Sinners has solidified itself as one of Ryan Coogler’s most successful films, even though it hasn’t made as much money as some of the director’s other movies. Ever since its release, reviews for Sinners have been incredible, with Screen Rant’s own Mae Abdulbaki giving it a score of 9 out of 10. The horror movie’s positive reviews has led to Sinners finding success at the box office, which is amazing since it reportedly had a budget of between $90-$105 million. Sinners’ big budget meant it needed to make well over $200 million to be profitable for Warner Bros.

Thankfully, so far, Sinners has made an impressive $283 million at the box office (via Box Office Mojo). Out of all of Ryan Coogler’s movies, Sinners stands out as his first non-franchise film in over a decade. While Sinners won’t gross as much as the Black Panther movies, it has already made more than Creed, a major franchise movie, and Fruitvale Station, Coogler’s first feature film. Sinners’ box office success is so impressive since it is a completely original movie. Therefore, even though Sinners isn’t Coogler’s highest-grossing movie, it has still set records for the director at the box office.

Sinners Has Had The Best Legs For Any Ryan Coogler Movie

Sinners Continues To Be A Top Box Office Earner

Sinners grossed an impressive $48 million in its opening weekend, proving that it was a movie to watch out for. However, it is not uncommon for movies to find success in their opening weekend but then lose steam afterwards. Thankfully, this wasn’t the case for Sinners, which has continued to find success at the box office. In fact, Sinners now has the best legs of any movie directed by Coogler, which is impressive since he has directed some incredibly popular films. Refer to the chart below to learn how Coogler’s other movies have performed at the box office.

Box office legs refers to a film’s ability to have continued success at the box office, rather than just an impressive opening weekend. Because of the positive word of mouth for Sinners, Coogler’s unique horror movie hasn’t struggled to convince people to watch it in theaters. Ever since its release, Sinners has earned a reputation as a film that needs to be watched on the biggest screen possible, which is why it is now nearing a $300 million box office haul. This is a huge win for original movies, especially since Sinners had such a mᴀssive budget.

As seen in the above table, Creed was previously Coogler’s movie with the best legs. Not only has Sinners made more money than Creed, which revived the iconic Rocky franchise, it also has had better legs than both Black Panther and its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The first Black Panther movie, in particular, grossed over $1.3 billion at the box office and was one of the biggest movies of 2018, so it is very impressive that Sinners has broken this unique box office record for Coogler.

Sinners’ Record Box Office Legs Perfectly Sums Up Why Coogler’s Movie Is Doing So Well

Sinners Has Had Great Word Of Mouth

Week after week, Sinners has continued to be one of the top movies at the box office. This kind of success wouldn’t be possible without strong word of mouth. In addition to the critical acclaim that Sinners has received, audiences are clearly loving the horror movie. Sinners’ box office legs is a direct result of viewers recommending the film to their friends and family. Not only are a lot of people going to see Sinners, but they are also choosing to see it on IMAX screens to get the best experience possible.

Nowadays, this kind of success is somewhat rare for original movies. Warner Bros. spending $90-$105 million on Sinners was definitely a risk, but it is clear that it has paid off. This is exciting, as it will hopefully lead to more ambitious original movies being greenlit by studios in the coming years. Even once it is out of theaters, there is no doubt that Sinners will find success on digital and on streaming, proving that it is one of the most notable movies of the year.
