James Gunn Addresses Rumors Of The Batman 2 Losing Its Director

The Batman 2 gets a new update from James Gunn as the upcoming DC sequel still remains in development. While Robert Pattinson will be returning to the big screen as his version of the Dark Knight in The Batman 2, the road to the sequel has been longer than what most fans were expecting after the first film’s big success in 2022. As The Batman 2 filming is reportedly being eyed for the end of the year, very little is known about what the sequel will focus on.

While The Batman 2 news has been slow as of late, a fan recently asked Gunn on Threads if Matt Reeves is still set to direct the sequel. It didn’t take long for Gunn to respond, while also appearing to be confused about why this was being asked, as he stated, “Yes. Huh?” Check out his response below:

James Gunn On The Batman 2 Rumors

Rumors that Matt Reeves has parted ways or is set to part ways with The Batman 2 have emerged throughout the development period of the project, in part seemingly as a result of the sequel’s delays. As of right now, The Batman 2 is still scheduled to release in theaters on October 1, 2027.

What James Gunn’s The Batman 2 Update Means For The Sequel

While there will always be rumors floating around about major blockbusters like The Batman 2, Gunn’s latest response reinforces the idea that Matt Reeves will remain the movie’s director. Ever since Gunn and Peter Safran became co-CEOs of DC Studios, one of the best elements of their regime is the direct connection fans now have with the filmmaker through social media when it comes to getting rumors and reports properly addressed. Whether it has to do with main DCU projects or films/TV shows set outside the main continuity, Gunn is fairly good at making sure to eliminate any major DCU rumors.

Ultimately, it seems that if something doesn’t come from Gunn or DC Studios themselves, fans should not take it as confirmed, as rumors tend to be rife when it comes to superhero franchises, especially for a new franchise like the DCU that is still very early into its run. This is doubly true for things like canceled projects or releases losing directors, as rumors about these kinds of big events can be especially prevalent. But luckily, with Gunn’s latest response, fans can at least look forward to Reeves returning to the director’s chair for The Batman 2.

While Gunn’s comments keep things brief and straight to the point, it’s good to have it established that Reeves is not leaving The Batman 2 and is still attached to expanding this franchise. Following Gunn’s confirmation about the sequel, time will tell when there will be more The Batman 2 updates, including what new characters are set to show up in the sequel and who is joining the cast. Hopefully, as 2025 gets further in, there will be more news on The Batman 2 sooner rather than later.
