“A Franchise That’s Finally Hers”: John Boyega Addresses Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars Return & New Jedi Order Movie

Finn actor John Boyega recently revealed that he is very hopeful about Rey’s upcoming Star Wars movie, rumored to be тιтled Star Wars: New Jedi Order. New Jedi Order is one of several upcoming Star Wars movies, although doubts about the progress and the certainty of the project remain, especially after the Star Wars Celebration 2025 reveals shared little in the way of updates about the movie. At present, it does seem as though the movie is still in development, but announcements like Star Wars: Starfighter may mean it’s been pushed to the background for now.

Nevertheless, many remain excited about New Jedi Order, including, evidently, Finn actor John Boyega. In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Boyega shared:

“I miss Daisy, I haven’t seen Daisy face-to-face in a minute… I found out [about Daisy’s return] online. Being a genuine fan, I’m online, I watch reaction videos, I’m on the subscriber lists. I get the emails, as if I’m not in the films – you know, Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out… oh, does it?

It made sense to expand the franchise in that way. I’m just looking forward, first of all to see if it’s real, because we have had a few Star Wars announcements – you know, in development, they can’t quite get it done. I’m just hoping that Daisy gets that chance to shine in a franchise that’s finally hers, as a Jedi that’s fully qualified, I can’t wait to watch it. I really can’t. I’m happy for her.”

There are several things of note about these comments from Boyega, chief among them his positive view of Star Wars even now, his support of Daisy Ridley, and his apparent absence from New Jedi Order.

John Boyega Doesn’t Seem To Think He’ll Be In Rey’s New Jedi Order Movie

Boyega’s Comments Suggest He’s Happy To Be In The Audience But Doesn’t Anticipate His Return

Many have wondered whether Finn would appear in New Jedi Order, and the likelihood seemed pretty evenly split in either direction. Finn had been absolutely pivotal throughout the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and with his Force-sensitivity teased even in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, it seemed like it would make sense for Boyega to reprise his role as Finn in New Jedi Order. Many had even hoped to see Finn as a full-fledged Jedi in New Jedi Order, as that movie is set to take place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker in the Star Wars timeline.

On the other hand, it’s no secret that Boyega was (rightfully) very disappointed with how Finn was handled, especially as the sequels went on. For that reason, many suspected Boyega was not open to returning. Now, Boyega’s comments do seemingly confirm he will not be returning in New Jedi Order, as he is speaking as though he will solely be a viewer. It’s possible that invitation is yet to come, given how early in development New Jedi Order seems to be, although it remains unclear whether Boyega would say yes.

Our Take On John Boyega’s Comments

It’s Incredible To Know Boyega Is Still Supportive Of This Franchise

John Boyega as Finn wields a blue lightsaber in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.

In addition to seemingly learning that Boyega will not appear in New Jedi Order, it’s surprising but delightful to know that Boyega still loves Star Wars and remains supportive of Daisy Ridley. The latter is less shocking, as Boyega has never expressed negativity towards his co-stars, and he has long seemed supportive of his fellow castmates. However, I hadn’t expected to hear Boyega speak about continuing to be a fan, especially because of all that transpired with the sequels and how vocal Boyega has been about his disappointment.

Even so, it’s wonderful to know that Boyega still feels this way. Honestly, it positions Boyega as the much bigger person, as it would be all too easy and understandable for him to be bitter about how Finn was handled and disregard the franchise entirely. While John Boyega may not be reprising his role as Finn in Star Wars: New Jedi Order, this is a great update on his feelings about Daisy Ridley, Finn, and Star Wars.
