“I’ve Read It, Man”: John Boyega Explains Attack The Block 2’s Delayed Development (& Hints The Wait Is Nearly Over)

John Boyega explains the delayed development of Attack the Block 2 and gives a long-awaited update. Before he played Finn in Star Wars, Boyega starred in a British sci-fi movie called Attack the Block. The film centered around a teenage gang in South London who are forced to defend their territory when an alien invasion comes their way. It was directed by Joe Cornish and featured a cast including Boyega, Jodie Whittaker, Alex Esmail, and Leeon Jones. Since the movie’s release in 2011, Attack the Block 2 has been confirmed and is currently in pre-production.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused, Boyega explains why Attack the Block 2 has been delayed. When pressed about why the film is taking so long, Boyega noted that Cornish and the team arejust cooking it to make it right for everyone.” Part of this involves securing more funding to bring the effects up to modern standards. He said definitively that the movie would happen, and that he has read the script and is excited about the story. Check out the full quote from Boyega below:

I’ve read it, man. It’s cool, bro. It’s cool. Yeah, I’ve read it. Joe Cornish has done a phenomenal job on his draft. And we’re just cooking it to make it right for everyone. And we obviously need more money for those aliens. We want it to look real good for that 2026 crowd. But for us it’s just about developing the story, and making sure Moses and the rest of the characters that we have left are fully hashed out before bringing it out and going to shoot. But I’m very pᴀssionate and very willing that we will shoot Attack the Block 2. It will happen.

You’re going to have to see, but the story is crazy. I’ve got to get in the gym, Jesus.

What This Means For Attack The Block 2

The Film Was Announced In 2021

Attack the Block 2 was originally announced in 2021, which was already a decade after the release of the original movie. Four years later, the film still lacks a release date or significant production progress. The last real update was given in early 2023, wherein Cornish said that the team was “very quietly confident and excited about what [they’ve] got.” He even compared Attack the Block 2 to classic monster movies such as Alien and Terminator. However, things have been quiet on the sequel since.

Boyega’s quote confirms that, at minimum, Attack the Block 2 is still happening with both Cornish and Boyega attached. Now, it seems like the movie has at least progressed from being in the story phase to having a completed script. The Moses actor could not offer any kind of production schedule for the long-awaited sequel, but he did mention that the visuals would need to be brought up to speed for the “2026 crowd.” Whether this means that Attack the Block 2 is aiming for next year remains to be seen, but it is still an exciting tease.

The Actors Are Getting Older

The longer the wait for the second film, the older the original actors get and, by extension, the main characters are. However, given the sequel was not announced until 2021, Attack the Block 2 was always going to have this issue. The movie has become somewhat of a modern cult classic since its release, so it is important that Cornish and his team get things right. Whether they will be able to get things well-sorted in time for a 2026 release is uncertain, but updates are a step in the right direction.
