Heartbreaking Avengers: Doomsday Theory Has Thor And Loki Die In Their MCU Movie Reunion

Avengers: Doomsday will likely mark the Marvel Cinematic Universe reunion of Thor and Loki, but the film could end tragically for the brothers, as both of them could die when all is said and done. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor has had to watch his brother die twice. The first time happened in Thor: The Dark World, which was only Loki faking his death. Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief later died for real in one of the MCU’s best movies, Avengers: Infinity War, and Thor could do nothing against Thanos.

Thankfully, that was not the end of the line for Loki, as a variant of his escaped in Avengers: Endgame and was caught by the Time Variance Authority. Loki’s journey with the TVA and his fight against the Kang the Conqueror’s variants were chronicled in one of the MCU’s best TV shows, Disney+’s Loki. Hiddleston’s character became the protector of the multiverse, but Loki has yet to reunite with Thor, and that could happen in the next Avengers movie, as both Hemsworth and Hiddleston are part of Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast, though with a heartbreaking twist, according to an MCU theory.

Thor Dies Fighting The Beyonders In The Comics & The MCU Might Have Set Up His Companion

Thunderbolts* Introduces One Of The MCU’s Most Powerful Heroes

Chris Hemsworth’s Thor might meet his end soon. The character is one of the three remaining members of the original Avengers still in the MCU, and the only one to be confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday so far. Speaking to Vanity Fair in 2022, Hemsworth addressed what his future as Thor could look like if he returned. According to the MCU star, Marvel Studios would “probably have to close the book” on Thor if he returned, as Hemsworth felt he could be at the end of the character’s journey.

In light of his Avengers: Doomsday casting and the new major MCU character introduced by Thunderbolts*, I’m afraid that Hemsworth’s 3-year-old comments could point to Thor biting the dust in 2026. In the comics’ New Avengers #32, Thor would die alongside Hyperion in a battle against the Beyonders in the lead-up to Secret Wars. While Hyperion has yet to join the MCU, Thunderbolts* debuted another of Marvel’s Superman-like characters, Sentry, and I think Lewis Pullman’s Bob could take Hyperion’s place and die with Thor. Replacing the Beyonders could be Doctor Doom variants from the multiverse or the villain’s possible army.

Loki Is The Key To Controlling The Multiverse

The MCU Used One Of Its Disney+ Series To completely Change The Multiverse Saga

While Thor’s possible Avengers: Doomsday death stems from the comics and Sentry’s recent MCU debut, I have a direct theory about how Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is perhaps the most likely character to die in the next Avengers movie. Loki season 2 ended with the hero becoming the MCU’s God of Stories, the protector of the multiverse. Loki is now watching over the new strands of the multiverse at the Yggdrasil tree, protecting his friends and allowing other universes to flourish instead of being pruned by the TVA like they used to be.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will likely be after the control of what is left of the multiverse, which was his goal in 2015’s Secret Wars in the comics. That event saw the villain take the Beyonders’ powers and become God Emperor Doom, creating Battleworld and placing several multiverse characters under his rule. To get that sort of power in the MCU, RDJ’s Doctor Doom might have to kill Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. I can’t think of another character more crucial to the multiverse than Loki right now, and he stands in Doom’s way, which makes him a target.

I Would Be Heartbroken If Loki And Thor Died In Their MCU Reunion Movie

The MCU Heroes Deserve Better Than A Tragic Fate

Loki season 2 had one of the most heartbreaking endings in the MCU. While Tom Hiddleston’s Loki became a true hero and is now the multiverse’s protector, he has to be alone for eternity in his new role. That was incredibly sad, and I hoped Marvel would have a happier ending in mind for Loki if he were to return. When it was announced that both Hemsworth and Hiddleston would appear in Avengers: Doomsday, I instantly thought about how Thor does not know that there is a version of Loki alive out there, and now they could reunite.

The Avengers finding a way to keep the multiverse safe while allowing Loki to have a life again would be the best-case scenario. However, with Doctor Doom’s expected search for power, what I initially thought could be a happy reunion might now turn into one of the most tragic stories in the MCU. With the comics as a guide, Marvel could be laying the groundwork for Thor and Loki to reunite, only for both heroes to die, becoming Avengers: Doomsday‘s shocking deaths, but after their long MCU journeys, I feel like they deserve a happy ending instead.
