The Accountant 2 Crosses Major Box Office Milestone, Though The Success Of Ben Affleck’s Sequel Remains In Question

The Accountant 2 has crossed another milestone, but it may still struggle to make a profit. The R-rated sequel was released on April 25 and comes nine years after the original movie entered theaters. The Accountant 2‘s cast is led by Ben Affleck (Christian Wolff), Jon Bernthal (Braxton Wolff), Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Marybeth Medina), and Daniella Pineda (Anaïs). J.K. Simmons’ Raymond King drives the entire movie’s plot, as Christian and his friend strive diligently to avenge their fallen ally after his shocking ᴀssᴀssination.

According to a report by Variety, the sequel just crossed the $50 million domestic milestone, having grossed $50.8 million, alongside its $21 million international take. That amount comes after a $6.09 million weekend, which was enough to earn fourth place, behind Thunderbolts*, A Minecraft Movie, and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. Unfortunately, the $80 million budget makes profitability difficult to achieve, even after reaching this mark.

What The Accountant 2’s Milestone Means For Profitability

How It Compares To The Original Accountant Movie

While the sequel’s theatrical run is not yet over, the original Accountant movie grossed a much larger total by the end of its time in theaters. The movie earned $155 million against a $44 million budget, making for an easy profit and a reputation for success. The sequel has not been quite so fortunate, initially earning just $24.5 million in its opening weekend. That total nearly matched the original’s $24.7 million opening, but the pressures of inflation and a higher budget meant that it was a relatively disappointing outing.

The weeks since its release have been kinder, as it has shown the potential for long legs at the box office. Still, after accounting for the marketing budget and the cut that theaters take from profits, this movie will need approximately $200 million overall just to break even. Unfortunately, despite earning strong reviews from critics and audiences alike, it is unlikely that it will ever achieve profitability at the box office. The Accountant 2 could find streaming success, but the gap is simply too significant to see that success in theaters.

This Movie Deserves To Be A Success

Great movies fail every year in Hollywood, due to marketing failures, a lack of audience interest, or economic issues outside the theatrical world. The Accountant 2 could be no different, but it still deserves better than to be branded a complete failure. ScreenRant‘s Graeme Guttmann reviewed the movie before its release and found that it “surpᴀsses the first film due to its sense of humor, thrilling action, and unpredictability. Unfortunately, despite those promising traits, it failed to surpᴀss the original in the one race that matters: the box office. Because of that, it is unlikely to ever see true success.
