Shudder’s New Horror Movie With 74% RT Score Posts Strong Opening Weekend Close To 3.5x Its Budget

The opening weekend of the new horror movie from Shudder is performing amazingly well. Shudder is a subscription streaming service that is known for its curated selection of horror and thriller movies. The platform, which is owned by AMC Networks, has also distributed quite a few projects as Shudder originals, both in theaters and on streaming. These тιтles include the anthology series Creepshow, the 2018 thriller Revenge (which was helmed by Coralie Fargeat, the Oscar-nominated director of 2024’s The Substance), and the 2020 supernatural found footage movie Host.

In more recent years, Shudder has put out a number of notable theatrical releases. In addition to multiple new installments in the V/H/S franchise, this includes the uncanny breakout horror hit Skinamarink (which grossed $2.1 million worldwide against a $15,000 budget), the David Dastmalchian period piece Late Night with the Devil (which earned the best opening weekend for an IFC Films release at the time it premiered in 2024), and the buzzy slasher movie In a Violent Nature (which is notable for following the silent, hulking killer rather than the victims).

Clown In A Cornfield Is Raking In The Box Office

Clown in a Cornfield is having an outstanding debut weekend at the box office. The new slasher movie, which is being distributed by Shudder and RLJE Films, is adapted from the 2020 young adult horror novel of the same name by Adam Cesare and follows teenager Quinn Maybrook (Katie Douglas) moving to the small town of Kettle Springs, where a killer dressed as the local clown mascot Frendo is stalking high schoolers. The Clown in a Cornfield release kicked off on May 9, just one week after the debut of the new big-budget Marvel movie Thunderbolts*.

The Clown in a Cornfield book won the Bram Stoker Award for Best Young Adult Novel.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Clown in a Cornfield is projected to close out its opening weekend with a 3-day total of $3.8 million at the domestic box office. This sees it premiering at No. 5 on the chart, beneath the holdover тιтles The Accountant 2, A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, and Thunderbolts*. However, the movie’s reported budget is less than $1 million, which means it has already most likely earned more than three and a half times its price tag.

What This Means For Clown In A Cornfield

It Is Likely Turning Out Pure Profit

Because movies generally need to earn back just two and a half times their production budgets in order to break even in theaters, Clown in a Cornfield is likely already well into the realm of earning a profit after just three days. This makes the possible Clown in a Cornfield 2 seem like a near guarantee, especially considering the fact that Cesare has already penned two sequels to the original novel, leaving a lot of narrative track for a potential film franchise to follow.
