Sydney Sweeney’s Remake Of Sci-Fi Cult Classic Gets Optimistic Update Despite 3 Years In Development

Despite three years of relative silence on its production, Sydney Sweeney

has addressed the current status of her remake of a cult-classic sci-fi movie with an optimistic update. Following smaller parts in The Handmaid’s Tale, Sharp Objects, and Once Upon Time In Hollywood, Sweeney’s breakout role came in the HBO teen drama Euphoria. In Euphoria, Sweeney portrays Cᴀssie Howard, a popular student at East Highland High School who is plagued by rumors of her past relationships and further complications with her later loves.

Outside the still-ongoing Euphoria, Sydney also appeared in The White Lotus‘ first season and the infamous Spider-Man spin-off movie Madame Webb. 2023 also saw her act and produce Anyone But You, a romantic comedy with her and Glen Powell playing two former lovers brought back together when they are invited to a wedding, leading to them agreeing to pretend to be a couple to fend off unwanted attention. Sweeney’s upcoming projects include the thrillers Echo Valley and The Housemaid, and a biopic centered on boxer Christy Martin.

Sweeney’s Barbarella Remake Is Still In Development

The Star Is Committed To The Reimagining

In 1968, Roger Vadim’s Barbarella was released in theaters, bringing the lead of Jean-Claude Forest’s comic series to the big screen. Jane Fonda took on the role of the тιтular character, as the space adventurer sets out to rescue a scientist from a far-off star system and prevent him from playing a part in creating a weapon that could pose a terrifying threat to Earth. Despite critics being unsatisfied with its writing upon release, the production values and inventive visuals allowed Barbarella to endure as a cult classic whose campier qualities would enable appreciation for the movie to grow.

In 2022, Sweeney was attached to Sony’s latest attempt to bring Barbarella back for a modern audience as an executive producer and leading star. However, despite three years of silence, Sweeney ᴀssured Empire that development for Barbarella was still pressing on, with her not only having recently discussed the movie’s script in a meeting but also stating that it is a project that she is dedicated to. Check out Sweeney’s full response below:

I was just in London and had a meeting to discuss the story and the script. I can’t say too much, but it’s really going to come together in a very, very fun and big way. It’s a long process. I don’t think people realise how long some things can take, but it’s gonna be worth the wait…

Is Barbarella another item on your bucket list?

Yes, it is! That’s what I’m saying! My thirties, I’ve really got to step it up!

Our Thoughts On Sweeney’s Barbarella Production Update

Scheduling Issues May Be Holding Production Back

Barbarella has a long history of attempted sequels and remakes that never saw the light of day, so it is understandable why there would be concern about whether Sweeney’s production may suffer the same fate. However, not only has Sweeney been focused on other projects, both behind-the-scenes and in starring roles, but director Edgar Wright has been working alongside her former co-star Powell on a new adaptation of The Running Man. Sydney Sweeney‘s response shows that the star and director are still in contact, and likely waiting for clearer schedules to move forward with Barbarella.
