Jennifer Coolidge Was Funny In A Minecraft Movie, But I Don’t Think Her Storyline Should Continue

Sorry Jennifer Coolidge fans, but I don’t think her character should return in a sequel to A Minecraft Movie. Even since its release, A Minecraft Movie has proven to be a juggernaut at the box office. As of this writing, it has made a total of $876 million at the worldwide box office (via Box Office Mojo), meaning A Minecraft Movie will likely soon gross $1 billion. Because of its impressive performance at the box office, it’s almost a guarantee that a sequel to A Minecraft Movie will be greenlit soon.

Even though reviews for A Minecraft Movie have been quite mixed, with Screen Rant’s own Mae Abdulbaki giving it a score of 4 out of 10, I hope a sequel does get made. I didn’t necessarily enjoy A Minecraft Movie, but there is a lot of story potential for the sequel. I would love to see characters like Steve, Garrett, Henry, Natalie, Dawn, and the newly introduced Alex explore the Overworld more in a sequel. However, after the first film, I don’t think Jennifer Coolidge should return for A Minecraft Movie 2.

Jennifer Coolidge’s Character Was Pretty Pointless In A Minecraft Movie

Coolidge Was Only In A Minecraft Movie For Comedic Relief

Jennifer Coolidge sits at a desk in a Minecraft Movie

In A Minecraft Movie, Coolidge plays Marlene, the principal of Henry’s school. At first, Marlene shows an interest in Garrett, but this doesn’t lead anywhere. While Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn all get sucked into the portal which takes them to the Overworld, Marlene remains in the real world for the entire movie. She does have some interaction with the Overworld though, since she hits the villager who comes into the real world.

Marlene’s storyline could be removed from A Minecraft Movie and practically nothing would change.

After hitting the villager, who is known as the nitwit, Marlene is desperate for forgiveness and offers to take him out for dinner. Therefore, A Minecraft Movie consistently cuts from the character’s adventures in the Overworld to Marlene’s date with the nitwit. Their date has some humorous moments, such as Marlene claiming that the nitwit is Finnish to explain his appearance and the fact that he doesn’t speak English. However, Marlene’s storyline could be removed from A Minecraft Movie and practically nothing would change.

A Minecraft Movie 2 Should Mostly Focus On Characters In The Overworld

Marlene Never Enters The Overworld In A Minecraft Movie

During the post-credits scene of A Minecraft Movie, it is revealed that the nitwit has learned to speak English after forming a romantic relationship with Marlene. This confirms that villagers in A Minecraft Movie are capable of speaking other languages. This is somewhat interesting, but I don’t think this needs to be a major plot point in a potential sequel. Therefore, I don’t think there’s a strong reason to bring Coolidge back for A Minecraft Movie 2.

Furthermore, even though her date with the nitwit is funny, it is kind of annoying every time A Minecraft Movie cuts from the Overworld back to the real world. The Overworld is where the main story of A Minecraft Movie takes place, while Marlene’s date with the villager is only included in the film for comedic relief. Since Marlene is not part of the main plot in the Overworld, there is no reason for her to return in the sequel. This is especially the case since I hope the sequel will primarily be set in the Overworld.

Instead of exploring Marlene’s relationship with the nitwit more, I want A Minecraft Movie 2 to primarily follow characters like Steve and Alex as they embark on another adventure in the Overworld. In addition to showing more of the Overworld, a sequel could also see characters explore the Nether more and potentially even travel to the End to fight the Ender Dragon. Overall, there are a lot of directions a sequel to A Minecraft Movie could go in, but I don’t think Coolidge’s character can add anything that interesting to the story.
