“It’s Not A No…”: Anyone But You 2 Gets Intriguing Update From Sydney Sweeney

Anyone But You 2 has gotten an update. The original movie, which was directed by Will Gluck and debuted in 2023, was a modernized adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing that followed resentful exes Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell) pretending to be in a relationship while at a destination wedding. The Anyone But You box office had an inauspicious beginning when it debuted at No. 4 over Christmas weekend with a $6 million haul against its $25 million budget, but it became a sleeper hit and eventually ballooned to a total of $220 million worldwide.

The newest print edition of Empire magazine featured an interview with Sydney Sweeney, who called in from Barcelona while on a break from the ongoing production of Euphoria season 3. During their conversation, she addressed the status of development on Anyone But You 2, which has not yet been officially greenlit. Sweeney, who was an executive producer on the original movie, said that it’s not a no” but “I don’t have an answer that I can say,” teasing that audiences will have to “wait and see.” Read her full quote below:

Ummmmm! You’ll just have to wait and see. It’s not a no, and it’s not a yes. It’s a, “I don’t have an answer that I can say for you.”

What This Means For Anyone But You 2

This Could Be A Good Sign For The Sequel

While this is far from an official confirmation that the possible Anyone But You 2 is moving forward, the fact that Sweeney is not flat-out saying no would seem to indicate that there have at least been continued conversations about the possibility of the movie getting a sequel. While the original movie’s box office success speaks for itself as an argument for mounting a sequel, one impediment may be the busy schedules of the two leads. In addition to Euphoria, Sweeney is attached to a number of projects, including the upcoming movies Echo Valley and The Housemaid, as well as a possible Barbarella remake.

The Housemaid, which was directed by Paul Feig, is an adaptation of the bestselling Freida McFadden novel of the same name.

While there has only been one Glen Powell movie since the release of Anyone But You, that project – 2024’s Twisters – was also a hit. That, combined with the success of the 2023 rom-com and his 2022 movie Top Gun: Maverick, makes him a H๏τ commodity in Hollywood. Just like Sweeney, he is attached to a huge number of upcoming projects, most notably Edgar Wright’s upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Running Man and the Hulu comedy series Chad Powers.

Our Take On The Anyone But You 2 Update

The Movie Could Be Something Special

Should Anyone But You 2 actually come to fruition, it has the opportunity to occupy a unique space in the romantic comedy genre. Because rom-coms tend to conclude with “happily ever after” endings, it is quite uncommon for them to get sequels that follow the same couple and reexamine that relationship. While movies like Bridget Jones’s Diary and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before have had multiple direct sequels, the return of Ben and Bea could still stand out among other entries in the genre by focusing on the midpoint of their relationship rather than the beginning.
