Ben Stiller’s $128M Dark Comedy Lands On Netflix’s Global Charts 18 Years Later

Ben Stiller‘s dark comedy, which made over $128 million at the box office, has landed on Netflix’s global chart 18 years after its release. Stiller has been a consistent comedic presence since the 1990s, starting with his sketch comedy series, The Ben Stiller Show. He went on to make guest appearances in television shows like Friends, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, and Extras, the last of which earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.

After beginning his career in television, Stiller transitioned to film and starred in a string of successful studio comedies, including romantic comedies like There’s Something About Mary and Along Came Polly, and more absurdist and satirical style comedies such as Zoolander, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and Tropic Thunder. Since the mid-2010s, Stiller has shifted back to television, directing episodes of Severance and other shows. However, many of Stiller’s studio comedies from the 2000s remain popular to this day.

The Heartbreak Kid Lands On Netflix’s Global Chart

It Ranks 7th For This Week

The Heartbreak Kid has landed on Netflix’s global chart. Co-written and directed by the Farrelly brothers, known for comedies like Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary, the 2007 rom-com is a remake of the 1972 film of the same name and stars Ben Stiller as a man who hastily marries a woman, only to find his true love while on their honeymoon in Mexico. The cast also includes Michelle Monaghan, Malin Åkerman, Jerry Stiller, Rob Corddry, Carlos Mencia, Scott Wilson, and Danny McBride.

Now, 18 years after its release, Ben Stiller’s rom-com has landed on Netflix’s global chart. The Heartbreak Kid ranks seventh on Netflix’s Global Top 10 movies with 2.7 million views and 5.3 million hours viewed for the week of April 28 to May 4. It ranks below Havoc, Where the Crawdads Sing, Woody Woodpecker, The Equalizer 2, Fast X, The Life List, and above Despicable Me 4, The Boss Baby, and The Two Popes.

The Heartbreak Kid isn’t available on Netflix in the United States, though it is streaming on MGM+.

Our Take On The Heartbreak Kid’s Netflix Success

A Testament to Ben Stiller’s Star Power?

The whims of Netflix viewers are often confusing, as was the case in past weeks, with Angelina Jolie’s forgotten and largely panned romantic comedy, Life or Something Like It, surprisingly landing in the global top 10. The Heartbreak Kid is a similar тιтle, as it was received negatively by critics and audiences for lacking the boldness and humor of the Farrelly brothers’ previous movies, holding 29% and 37% scores on Rotten Tomatoes. However, The Heartbreak Kid was a box office success, and 18 years later, it remains popular on Netflix, perhaps attributable to nothing more than the sheer presence of Ben Stiller.
