Jurᴀssic World Rebirth Has Easily Fixed A Major Issue With The Previous $4 Billion Trilogy

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is a new direction for the Jurᴀssic Park franchise, but it’s already fixing a problem from the previous trilogy. Despite poor reviews from critics and audiences, the Jurᴀssic World trilogy was wildly successful. While the first film did an excellent job of reestablishing the franchise for a new generation, the following films failed to deliver on what its predecessor set up. However, each Jurᴀssic World film made $1 billion at the worldwide box office as audiences love watching people run away from or get eaten by scary dinosaurs.

After the trilogy ended, there were questions about the franchise’s future. Universal quickly got the ball rolling on a new film and possibly more as Rebirth was announced in early 2024. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards and written by David Koepp, the writer behind the first two Jurᴀssic Park films. Koepp’s return shows that Universal wants this franchise to return to its roots, and it’s doing so by going back to an island and away from civilization.

The Jurᴀssic World Trilogy Was All About Dinosaurs Coming To Humanity’s World

Dinosaurs Escaped The Island In The Jurᴀssic World Trilogy

The Jurᴀssic World trilogy started with a fully realized version of John Hammond’s vision for Jurᴀssic Park. An entire amusement park featuring dinosaurs had been built, but greedy executives went too far and accidentally created a hybrid killing machine. After the park collapsed, humans returned to the island in Fallen Kingdom to save the dinosaurs before a volcanic eruption sent them back to extinction. However, this may have been a mistake, as the dinosaurs broke loose and invaded civilization, setting the stage for Dominion.

Dinosaurs running loose among humanity wasn’t new for the franchise as a T-Rex had already rampaged through San Diego in The Lost World. However, it was the first time that a mᴀss invasion of dinosaurs happened, forcing humans to figure out how to live alongside gigantic reptiles. Unfortunately, Dominion didn’t fully deliver on this concept as most of the film was set in the woods surrounding Biosyn’s headquarters. While there were some cool dinosaur chase scenes in cities, it could have gone further with this concept.

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth Returns Humans To The Dinosaurs’ Environments

Rebirth Brings The Franchise Back To A Dinosaur-infested Island With A Twist

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth takes place five years after the events of Dominion. Many dinosaur species have returned to environments similar to their old ones after living with humans has become uninhabitable. Meanwhile, a pharmaceutical company has recruited a team to find dinosaur DNA that could be the key to a revolutionary drug. The team is ᴀssigned to travel to a restricted island, home to the original research facility for Jurᴀssic Park. The island is filled with failed, mutated experiments that survived in isolation for decades.

While it is intriguing to see dinosaurs in modern civilization, there is more suspense and horror when humans are in an unfamiliar and dangerous setting.

What’s promising about this concept is that it places humans back into the dinosaur’s habitat, not the other way around. The dinosaurs have the advantage, and humans will have to find ways to survive in an environment where they are outnumbered and underpowered. While it is intriguing to see dinosaurs in modern civilization, there is more suspense and horror when humans are in an unfamiliar and dangerous setting.

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth’s Setting Can Help Recapture The Magic Of Jurᴀssic Park

This Franchise Needs To Go Back To Basics

No film in this franchise has come close to matching the magic of the original Jurᴀssic Park. It’s a perfect blend of thrills and action with blockbuster filmmaking. Jurᴀssic World Rebirth has the potential to revive this magic, based on its new setting and concept. It returns to an island setting, where the franchise tends to succeed, and has plenty of opportunities for memorable dinosaur action. However, it could also bring horror back to the franchise, which has been missing for a while.

While Jurᴀssic Park is mainly remembered as an entertaining thrill ride, it can be quite scary at times. Scenes like the Velociraptor kitchen hunt and the T-Rex encounter have some legitimately creepy moments that heighten the suspense. The Jurᴀssic World trilogy was mainly action films, favoring explosive dinosaur fights and high-speed chase scenes. The introduction of mutated dinosaurs sounds haunting and presents many chances to deliver the scariest moments in the franchise. A return to horror and an island setting could be what Jurᴀssic World Rebirth needs to recapture the magic.
