A Minecraft Movie is nearing the coveted $1 billion mark at the box office, and it is becoming more clear when the video game adaptation will hit that milestone. Very few movies ever make $1 billion at the box office, with the only 2025 film to have crossed it so far being the Chinese film Ne Zha 2, which has made a whopping $2.13 billion worldwide. It now looks as if A Minecraft Movie will be the second 2025 film to make $1 billion, with it already the second highest-grossing movie of the year.
Minecraft is one of the biggest video games of all time, which is why it isn’t surprising that A Minecraft Movie has been a mᴀssive box office success. It was initially estimated to make between $65 to $80 million in the US in its opening weekend, but it ended up smashing these numbers by opening to $162.7 million domestically and $313 million globally. A Minecraft Movie has since broken box office records, fueling it toward the one remaining threshold Warner Bros. is hoping to see it cross.
A Minecraft Movie Is Only $125 Million Away From Making $1 Billion At The Box Office
And It Has The Steam To Close The Gap
As of the writing of this article, A Minecraft Movie is only $125 million away from making $1 billion at the box office. Up to this point, it’s raked in $875.2 million worldwide, making the movie a mᴀssive success when compared to its budget of $150 million (via Box Office Mojo). The film has been out for just over a month now, and considering how much it has made in its first six weekends, it should be able to easily make another $125 million.
A Minecraft Movie‘s success domestically and in international markets has been divided fairly evenly, meaning that continued contribution worldwide should be enough for A Minecraft Movie to hit $1 billion. Domestically, it’s made $398.8 million, while it has made another $467.4 million in international markets. This goes to show how much of a worldwide phenomenon Minecraft is, with the film’s success also undoubtedly being helped by A Minecraft Movie‘s status as an internet meme.
A Minecraft Movie Will Likely Cross The $1 Billion Milestone By The End Of May
Based On The Movie’s Last Few Weekends
Despite A Minecraft Movie‘s box office success so far, the film is undoubtedly slowing down. However, more than a month after its release, it has proven to have legs. A Minecraft Movie saw a 43.9% drop in weekend five, bringing in $22.7 million domestically, while it saw a smaller 39.5% drop in weekend six at $13.7 million. These numbers are nowhere near A Minecraft Movie‘s opening weekend, but that’s still a significant chunk of change.
In the previous two weekends alone, the film has made an additional $150 million worldwide. If its current rate of decline holds, making slightly less than that over the next four weeks should be no problem, and A Minecraft Movie should cross the $1 billion milestone by the end of May. Even if it doesn’t quite make it to this milestone by then, though, it should still creep over the line in early June.
How Much Will A Minecraft Movie Make Overall?
Will The Block Party Edition Help?
If A Minecraft Movie does make over $1 billion, it is doubtful that it will go much higher. The film will probably end with less than $1.1 billion, as crossing that means that it would need to almost double the $125 million that it needs right now. With the box office slowing down, it is expected to barely make it to $1 billion rather than blow through the finish line – there is always the possibility that A Minecraft Movie slows down too quickly, and stalls out in the high $900 million range.
The studio, however, is already trying to keep the momentum going. A Minecraft Movie: The Block Party Edition, a sing-along version, was also released this past weekend. While numbers aren’t available for how well this version performed, it could have contributed to the smaller drop. Given how important audience participation has been to the film’s success, with the viral Chicken Jockey trend helping to fill theaters across the country, this could be the savvy move by WB that helps A Minecraft Movie become its first $1 billion grosser since Barbie.
