Tim Burton’s Comedy Sequel, 36 Years In The Making, Trends On Netflix After $451 Million Box Office Run

Tim Burton films have always been popular with audiences, but this long-awaited sequel is dominating the Netflix charts after its impressive run in theaters. The wacky auteur who broke onto the scene with films like Edward Scissorhands is a rare example of a Hollywood visionary whose unique films are also often box office successes. Burton’s keen eye for detail and illustrative style not only helped him stand out from his contemporaries, but gave each of his films a signature touch that couldn’t be duplicated. Even when simply serving as a producer, Burton’s fingerprints are all over the project.

Despite this vaunted reputation, Burton’s films released in the last few decades have been met with a mixed response from critics and fans. His approach to popular franchises like Dark Shadows and Alice in Wonderland was met with little praise, and it seemed as if the Hollywood wunderkind of old had lost his touch. Fortunately, Tim Burton has had something of a career resurgence of late, and a bit of that stylistic auteur has returned behind the camera. Netflix’s Wednesday is a smash-hit, and his latest cinematic effort was equally well-received both in theaters and on the streaming platform.

Nearly 40 years after the debut of the first film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has begun to take the Netflix streaming charts by storm. As reported by Flix Patrol, the legacy sequel has jumped all the way to third place in the top 10 despite only being on the platform for less than a week. So far, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has only failed to pᴀss Twilight and the Netflix original film, Exterritorial, and has already rocketed past the rest of the Twilight Saga, which is also dominating the charts.

What This Means For Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Its Streaming Success Is A Victory Lap

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice might not be the last time that the infamous bioexorcist appears onscreen.

Though the sequel is still mostly in development, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice might not be the last time that the infamous bioexorcist appears onscreen. This means that the movie’s success on Netflix is more of a victory lap than anything else, and likely won’t spur Beetlejuice 3 to arrive any faster. Though ideas have been floated to bring the beloved ’80s franchise back again, Burton and the rest of the crew probably won’t make another sequel without a really compelling idea to propel it along.

Our Take On Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’s Streaming Success

The Legacy Sequel Was Destined To Succeed On Netflix

While some streaming hits come as a legitimate surprise, the Netflix success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice seems like it was bound to happen. As soon as the film arrived on the platform in early May, it began to shoot up the charts. This is due in large part to its newness, but it also features a bevy of recognizable names and a franchise tag that almost every moviegoer knows by heart. The movie grossed over $450 million in theaters (via Box Office Mojo), so there is bound to be a huge audience that wants to see it for the first time, or see it again.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice premiered on September 6, 2024.

On top of that, the movie also co-stars Jenna Ortega, one of the H๏τtest names in young Hollywood today. Ortega is directly linked to Netflix through her starring role in Burton’s Wednesday. Though she isn’t a homegrown talent like Millie Bobby Brown, Ortega will forever be linked to Netflix because of her record-smashing Addams Family series. She was one of the biggest draws when Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hit theaters, and she’s likely driving engagement on Netflix as well.
