I Thought I’d Want A Sequel To Sinners, But Now I Hope It Never Happens

Even though Sinners is arguably the best film of the year so far, I don’t want it to get a sequel. Ever since its release, reviews for Sinners have been outstanding, with Screen Rant’s own Mae Abdulbaki giving it a 9 out of 10. In addition to the critical success it has experienced, Sinners has also been a hit at the box office. As of this writing, Sinners has grossed over $240 million at the worldwide box office (via Box Office Mojo). Because of this critical and commercial success, it seems like a sequel to Sinners would make sense.

In addition to these two important factors, the ending of Sinners also seems to leave the door open for a follow-up film. A sequel to Sinners could potentially follow characters like Stack, Mary, and possibly even Sammie in the 1990s. While many characters die in Sinners, enough major characters survive to warrant a sequel, and many fans of the film are likely eager to learn more about these people and the supernatural world they live in. However, I don’t think a sequel to Sinners is necessary.

Sinners Seemed Like An Easy Franchise Opportunity For Ryan Coogler & Michael B. Jordan

Sinners Has Been A Huge Success For Coogler & Jordan

When Sinners’ credits start to roll, it seems like the story of the film is complete, with Sammie being the only survivor of the vampire attack. However, the post-credits scene of Sinners reveals that Stack and Mary, who are portrayed by Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld in the film, also survived. The horror movie’s post-credits scene jumps forward 60 years and is set in 1992. In the scene, Stack and Mary visit a much older Sammie, which seems to set up a potential sequel.

The reveal that Stack and Mary have been living as vampires for the last 60 years opens up many possibilities for not just a sequel, but a whole franchise starring Jordan, Steinfeld, and helmed by Ryan Coogler. Before the release of Sinners, early reports claimed that Coogler and Jordan envisioned some franchise potential, so it’s understandable to think that this post-credits scene will lead to more films. A sequel to Sinners could potentially be set in the 90s, or another decade in the 1900s.

Sinners Is So Great That It Doesn’t Need A Sequel

Sinners Is An Amazing Original Movie

While Sinners leaves the door open for more movies to be made, I don’t think it needs a sequel. One of the main reasons Coogler wanted to direct Sinners is because he’s been making franchise films for many years now, such as Creed, Black Panther, and its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Therefore, if Coogler decided to make a sequel to Sinners, then his whole reason for making the original horror film in the first place would no longer be true.

Sinners proves that original movies can still thrive and stand out in the current Hollywood landscape.

Sinners is an incredible original movie that was written and directed by Coogler. Instead of him making a follow-up film and turning it into a franchise, I would much rather see Coogler direct another original project. There are already so many franchises in Hollywood, which is why the success that Sinners has found is such a huge accomplishment. Sinners proves that original movies can still thrive and stand out in the current Hollywood landscape, so I would honestly be slightly disappointed if it became a franchise.

Even Ryan Coogler Has Cooled On The Idea Of Making A Sinners Sequel

A Sinners Sequel Now Seems Unlikely

Even though early reports suggested that more movies set in the world of Sinners may be made, it now seems like Coogler is leaning towards leaving Sinners as a one-off film. After the release of Sinners, Coogler admitted that he wanted it to feel like a complete movie that didn’t require a sequel. Therefore, as of now, it doesn’t seem like the critically acclaimed filmmaker is thinking seriously about making a sequel to Sinners. Coogler said:

I never think about that.

I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that. I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appeтιтe for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.

I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention.

Given the success that Sinners has experienced, both critically and commercially, it’s possible that Coogler will change his mind and decide to make a sequel. At the end of the day, Coogler is undoubtedly a filmmaker I trust. Therefore, I will be on board with whatever project he decides to pursue next. However, I would prefer for Sinners to be left as a standalone film since I don’t believe it needs a sequel.
