Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Thunderbolts*.Thunderbolts* makes it possible for Charlie Cox’s Daredevil to join Avengers: Doomsday in an important role. Cox played Matt Murdock for three seasons of Netflix’s Daredevil. While The Defenders Saga mentioned MCU events, the characters did not cross over. That changed when Cox and other stars from the Netflix Marvel shows were brought back. Since returning to the role, Cox’s Daredevil has appeared in one MCU movie and multiple TV shows. He will next be seen in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, which is currently in production for a March 2026 release.
Daredevil is nowhere to be seen in Thunderbolts*, but the movie brings a major event to New York City. Lewis Pullman’s The Void casts his shadows all over New York, which means that heroes like Cox’s Daredevil, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, and others could have been pulled into their shame rooms. However, Thunderbolts* ends with no explanation of how many heroes were affected besides the team. That said, there is a chance that the question will be answered in the future, as the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene set up the perfect story that could bring Daredevil to Avengers: Doomsday.
Thunderbolts* Has Established The MCU’s New Avengers
Marvel Studios Dropped A New Avengers Movie By Surprise
I knew the reveal of the meaning behind Thunderbolts*‘s asterisk was likely going to be connected to the Avengers in some way. There were signs that pointed to that, such as the fact that Valentina Allegra de Fontaine was revealed by the MCU movie’s trailers to be the new owner of Avengers Tower. However, the biggest sign to me came from the comics. The Thunderbolts’ ongoing run was at one point changed, making the team’s name the Dark Avengers. The MCU went for a similar approach, though it chose a different name for the team.
If a Thunderbolts* sequel ever happens, it will carry a different тιтle, as the Thunderbolts were revealed to be the MCU’s New Avengers. It all happens towards the end of the movie, because at the start of it, I would have said that it was impossible for those characters to become the new Avengers team. They were all anti-heroes dealing with complex feelings and great darkness. However, by creating a bond with one another, the Thunderbolts became heroes, with a beautiful sequence showing the team saving regular New York citizens when the Void started attacking.
To save herself from going to prison, Valentina introduces the Thunderbolts to the world as The New Avengers, the team that saved New York from The Void. Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova then makes it clear to Val that she now works for them. Thunderbolts*‘s post-credits scene then had a surprising time jump, showing how the characters have adapted to their roles as The New Avengers 14 months after the events of the film. It was at that moment that Marvel set up a major storyline for the MCU’s Phase 6 that could include Daredevil.
The MCU’s Two Avengers Teams Are Fighting Over A Trademark
Both Avengers Teams Will Appear Next Year In Avengers: Doomsday
While the Thunderbolts have now had a name change, with Marvel Studios officially announcing them as The New Avengers, the team is not the only version of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes currently in the MCU. That is because the first MCU movie of 2025 had already set up the debut of a new Avengers team. Captain America: Brave New World saw President Thaddeus Ross ask Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson to restart the Avengers. At the end of the movie, Sam decides to go on that journey, with Danny Ramirez’s Falcon by his side.

As expected, Sam Wilson was not at all happy with the stunt Valentina Allegra de Fontaine pulled. Captain America is ᴀssembling his own Avengers team, and having the former Thunderbolts claim The New Avengers name actively hurts the public image of his team. Thunderbolts*‘s post-credits scene confirmed that Sam was taking measures to ensure that The New Avengers would not have the right to the team name, fighting them for the Avengers trademark. Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes tried talking to him, but it did not work, so the two Avengers teams are at odds going into Avengers: Doomsday.
Daredevil Has Helped MCU Heroes With Their Legal Troubles In The Past
Matt Murdock’s Skills In A Courtroom Have Been Showcased Many Times
Charlie Cox’s Daredevil has shown in his two solo series that Matt Murdock is a formidable lawyer. I think Daredevil: Born Again episode 3, which focused on White Tiger’s trial, is one of the best episodes of the MCU series, showing that courtroom scenes can be as thrilling as superhero fights if done right. Matt is a “really good” lawyer who has experience helping other heroes. In the Netflix Daredevil series, Matt defended Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, which was a complex matter, as he was involved with him getting put on trial in the first place.

Spider-Man: No Way Home served as Cox’s formal MCU debut, with Daredevil interacting with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Matt Murdock was Peter Parker’s lawyer, and due to his work, Spider-Man did not go to prison, with Matt helping him deal with the legal repercussions of his secret idenтιтy being revealed and Spider-Man’s alleged role in Mysterio’s death. In Daredevil: Born Again season 1, Matt managed to win what appeared to be an impossible case. Because of him, Hector Ayala, the White Tiger, was cleared of all charges related to his accidental role in a corrupt cop’s death.
Matt Murdock Could Help The New Avengers Keep Their Name In Avengers: Doomsday
Daredevil Is Already Close To Where The Heroes Are
Based on his background in helping superheroes with legal troubles, Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock would be the perfect character The New Avengers could call in for help with their trademark situation. Sure, the MCU also has another superhero lawyer, Tatiana Maslany’s She-Hulk. She-Hulk’s idenтιтy is known to the world, so that means The New Avengers would know she is a superhero and a lawyer, whereas Daredevil and Matt Murdock are different people to the world. However, She-Hulk operates out of Los Angeles, while Daredevil has his Murdock & McDuffie law firm in New York.
Matt Murdock could also get to know about The New Avengers’ situation through the news, given how Thunderbolts* revealed that the heroes have become quite popular.
Since The New Avengers’ base of operations is the MCU’s original Avengers Tower, that means the team will continue in New York, which puts them in the same city as Cox’s Daredevil. Through that connection, Avengers: Doomsday could see the heroes interact while dealing with an event, which could lead to Daredevil catching wind of their trademark issue. Matt Murdock could also get to know about The New Avengers’ situation through the news, given how Thunderbolts* revealed that the heroes have become quite popular. Either way, Daredevil‘s inclusion in Avengers: Doomsday has become more likely due to Thunderbolts*‘s story setup.
