Ryan Reynolds is already working on ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool‘s movie return, and I’m convinced that the planned Marvel Cinematic Universe film would be the perfect way to bring back a thrilling team. After showing Fox that Wade Wilson had the potential to become one of the most popular live-action superheroes of all time, Reynolds spearheaded one of the MCU’s best movies. ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine ended its worldwide box office run with $1.3 billion (via Box Office Mojo).

That was more than enough to make ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. The film’s success helped the MCU during a time of need, as the franchise has dealt with mixed results throughout the Multiverse Saga. A ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine sequel happening after Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s latest Marvel movie then became inevitable, but it appears Wade Wilson’s MCU future holds something different, though the plan is still for him to appear in upcoming MCU movies.

After ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, I thought that a sequel would not take long to be announced. However, Marvel Studios has yet to reveal its official plans for Reynolds’ ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool and Jackman’s Wolverine. Both actors were suspiciously absent from the Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement. Adding to that, Reynolds has made it known in interviews that he does not want to star in a ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool movie, but instead hopes the character becomes a supporting player in future MCU entries.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Ryan Reynolds is writing a new Marvel movie featuring ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool. Like the actor has said in interviews, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool would play a supporting role in the film, not lead it. The Merc With a Mouth should be accompanied by some interesting Marvel players, as the report claims the project will feature three or four X-Men characters. The new ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool MCU movie is separate from Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot, which is being penned by The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes‘ Michael Lesslie.

The Team Movie Went Through Several Iterations Before Being Scrapped

Given their long-time friendship and how successful ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine was for Marvel, I believe the MCU movie Reynolds is writing will likely feature Jackman’s Wolverine. That would still leave a couple of roles for other X-Men characters, and I think I know where Reynolds could be going with the project. In 2018, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2 introduced the franchise’s version of the X-Force, which is a ᴅᴇᴀᴅlier and more bloodthirsty version of the X-Men. I believe the MCU could be resurrecting the team.

Before Marvel got the rights to the X-Men back when Disney bought Fox, there were plans for an X-Force movie. The project had gone through multiple iterations, with Reynolds even working on the film’s script at one point. In its final version, the X-Force movie would have been written and directed by Drew Goddard, the creator of Netflix’s Daredevil. X-Force is the perfect team for Reynolds’ ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool, and its darker tone fits Jackman’s Wolverine well. Besides, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool franchise characters could return for it.

I absolutely loved Josh Brolin’s Cable and Zazie Beetz’s Domino in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2. It would be tragic if the characters were to remain contained to that one movie when they have so much potential for more. For instance, Marvel’s X-Men ’97 recently showed how Cable could be a key part of the MCU’s X-Men reboot if done right. With Reynolds wanting ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool to play a supporting role moving forward, an X-Force movie could use him in the best possible way.

The most exciting part of Reynolds’ ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool is how well he bounces off other Marvel characters. ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine showcased that not only through Jackman’s Wolverine, but also multiverse players like Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm, Wesley Snipes’ Blade, and more. In an X-Force movie, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool would be able to thrive and still have the same kind of scene-stealing R-rated antics that fans have grown used to seeing from him. I believe the resurrection of the X-Force project is the ideal way to keep Ryan Reynolds’ ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool at the top of his game.
