What This Means For The Conjuring: Last Rites
Everything That Was Revealed
The first-look images also come with the first plot details for The Conjuring: Last Rites, including which of the Warrens’ real-life cases the movie will be covering. Last Rites is set in 1986, five years after the events of The Devil Made Me Do It. Ed and Lorraine Warren have stepped away from exorcisms, mainly because of Ed’s heart attack during the third film. However, a new development pulls them back in for one final investigation. At the heart of Last Rites is one of the Warrens’ most well-known cases – the haunting of the Smurl family.
The Smurl family moved into a duplex in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, during the 1970s and over the following years, the family reported a series of disturbing paranormal events, ranging from eerie smells and disembodied voices to more violent and invasive manifestations. The case drew widespread media attention, with the Smurls appearing on shows like Larry King Live and Entertainment Tonight. Their story was chronicled in the 1986 book The Haunted: One Family’s Nightmare and adapted into a 1991 TV movie starring Sally Kirkland.
