Snow White

What This Means For Snow White
The Film’s Theatrical Performance Explained
Snow White was made on an estimated budget in the $250 million range, setting its breakeven point likely higher than $500 million. Considering the film has now been out in theaters for well over a month and hasn’t even grossed half of that, it likely won’t be hitting profitability during its theatrical run. VOD revenue can help to make up for softer box office performance, but closing this kind of gap will be an extremely tall order. Unfortunately, VOD revenue is almost never made public.
Snow White‘s VOD release follows a mixed reception from audiences and critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the critics’ score sits at a lackluster 40%. Snow White reviews generally praised Zegler’s lead performance, but took issue with certain storytelling choices and the visual presentation, particularly when it comes to the Seven Dwarfs. The audience-driven Popcornmeter score is higher at 72%, however, suggesting general movie-goers found more to enjoy with the live-action remake. This could be a sign that the film will perform moderately well on home-viewing platforms.
Our Take On Snow White’s VOD Release
The Film Arrives On Digital As Another Live-Action Remake Looms
Disney’s live-action remakes are in a tough spot. Many of them have been fairly significant hits at the box office, but their artistic merits have repeatedly been called into question, especially since the animated originals remain beloved classics. Snow White has not had the benefit of a strong box office performance to soften the critical blow, and it raises questions about future Disney live-action remakes and whether the company should continue to pursue this avenue.
THR recently reported that Disney’s live-action Tangled remake has been put on pause.
Of course, Snow White‘s underperformance comes just before the release of Disney’s live-action Lilo & Sтιтch remake, which is already poised to be a hit. The impending success of this film will be a welcome one after the reception to Snow White and the controversy surrounding it. With the Zegler-starring film set to be available to watch at home soon, it will be interesting to see if opinions regarding the movie evolve as the controversy fades.
