A Minecraft Movie Left Room For A Major Steve Upgrade In The Sequel & I’m Sure He’ll Get It

Since Steve has spent years in the Overworld in A Minecraft Movie, I was surprised that he didn’t have a more powerful armor set. The Minecraft movie was finally released in April 2025 after being in development for over ten years. While reviews for A Minecraft Movie have been quite mixed, with Screen Rant’s own Mae Abdulbaki giving it a score of 4 out of 10, it successfully includes many items and creatures from the video game. However, obviously, not everything from the Minecraft video game is included in the movie.

At the beginning of the film, Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn get sucked through a portal which transports them to the Overworld. Once in the mysterious, block-filled dimension, they meet Steve, who is hilariously portrayed by Jack Black. By the end of A Minecraft Movie, Steve teaches the other characters all they need to know about the Overworld, setting them up for success in the final battle against Malgosha and her army of zombified piglins. While Steve wears diamond armor during this battle, I expect him to get an upgrade in the sequel to A Minecraft Movie.

A Minecraft Movie Held Back From Giving Steve Netherite Armor

Netherite Armor Is Better Than Diamond Armor In Minecraft

Before the release of A Minecraft Movie, I was very curious whether characters would wear armor sets. After all, seeing a person don a block-shaped armor set could have been very awkward in the live-action adaptation. Admittedly, Steve does look ridiculous while wearing diamond armor at the end of A Minecraft Movie, but this moment is visually humorous and fits with the tone of the movie. Therefore, I now want to see Steve wear more armor sets in a potential sequel to A Minecraft Movie.

While diamond armor used to be the strongest armor in the game, that is no longer the case. Therefore, while Steve wears the diamond armor to ensure his victory over Malgosha and her army at the end of the movie, he is due for an upgrade in the sequel. Netherite was first introduced to the video game as part of the Nether Update, which was released in 2020. In addition to adding new mobs and biomes to the Nether, this update drastically changed Minecraft Survival mode since diamond armor became the second most durable armor set in the game.

Netherite ingots can be made from netherite scraps and gold ingots in the game. From there, players can use a smithing table and smithing template to upgrade their diamond gear. Since Steve shows off his diamond armor at the end of A Minecraft Movie, all he needs to do is gather a few more items to receive a significant upgrade in the sequel. Admittedly, diamond armor’s bright blue color is more visually appealing than netherite armor, which is perhaps why Steve wears it in the movie, but it makes sense for him to obtain more powerful armor in the sequel.

Minecraft 2 Will Likely Give Steve The Netherite Armor Next

Steve Needs An Upgrade In A Minecraft Movie 2

While a sequel to A Minecraft Movie has not yet been officially confirmed, the film’s mᴀssive box office haul suggests that one will definitely be greenlit soon. Since A Minecraft Movie does not include all the mobs and items from the video game, a sequel has mᴀssive potential to expand the world of the film franchise even more. Even though Steve goes back to the real world at the end of the film, A Minecraft Movie’s post-credits scene teases that he’ll return to the Overworld in a sequel.

If this is the case, then it would make sense for Steve to upgrade to netherite armor. After upgrading, perhaps he’ll give his diamond armor to Alex or another character. Steve spends a significant amount of time trapped in the Nether in the first film, so he is likely aware of netherite and its capabilities. Since the sequel will have to raise the stakes of A Minecraft Movie with a more powerful villain, it only makes sense for Steve to upgrade to netherite armor to better protect himself.
