Friendship, a new comedy movie starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, is hitting theaters this week. In the upcoming movie, which is directed by Andrew DeYoung, Robinson’s character, Craig, befriends his new neighbor, Austin, who is played by Paul Rudd. Craig is initially ecstatic that he makes several new friends in the neighborhood, but as seen in the trailer for Friendship, things take a dark turn when Austin decides that he no longer wants to continue their relationship. While Friendship will have comedic elements, this premise teases that the movie will tackle some darker themes and subject matter.
Friendship had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024, and is finally being released in theaters. Ever since its premiere, reviews for Friendship have been exceptional. Screen Rant’s own Graeme Guttman gave the film a score of 7 out of 10, and it also has an impressive rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes (via Rotten Tomatoes). This rating will likely change after its theatrical release, but it seems like Friendship could be one of the best and most surprising movies of both Robinson and Rudd’s careers.
Friendship Releases In Theaters On May 9, 2025
Friendship’s Limited Theatrical Run Begins On May 9, 2025
About eight months after its initial premiere at the Toronto Internal Film Festival, Friendship is finally starting its theatrical run on May 9, 2025. Since Friendship is a low-budget independent film, it is only receiving a limited theatrical release at first. Therefore, not all theaters will be playing the movie on May 9. However, Friendship’s wide release will start on May 23, 2025. Therefore, if you cannot find any showtimes in your area for Friendship this week, you will not have to wait that long to see the Robinson and Rudd-led movie.
If Friendship is playing in your area during its limited theatrical run, there will actually be showtimes available the night prior thanks to the Thursday preview showings. Therefore, some people may be able to watch Friendship on May 8, 2025. Because of movies like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Lilo & Sтιтch, and Final Destination Bloodlines, Friendship likely won’t be one of the biggest releases of May. However, the trailers have teased that it will be an unexpected comedy, proving that it’s still worth a watch.

When Will Friendship Release On Streaming?
Friendship Will Eventually Stream On Max
Since Friendship is only getting a limited release at first, it may be hard for some people to watch it in theaters. Therefore, it’s important to know when the movie will be available on streaming and on digital. Friendship is being distributed by A24, the celebrated independent production and distribution company that has also put out films such as Everything Everywhere All at Once, Hereditary, Lady Bird, and many others. Since Friendship is an A24 film, it will eventually land on Max.
In 2023, A24 made a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery which ensured that all movies produced and distributed by the company would land on Max before any other streaming services. Therefore, Friendship will join other A24 movies on Max. According to our projections, Friendship will become available to be streamed on Max in September 2024, one year after its initial premiere.
When Will Friendship Release On Digital?
Friendship Will Release On Digital This Summer
Based on the above projection, fans of the film may have to wait four months for Friendship to arrive on Max. However, it will become available to be purchased on digital sooner. Data indicates that Friendship could release on digital in July 2025, just two months after its theatrical release. Therefore, fans of the movie and those who missed it in theaters will be able to watch Friendship from the comfort of their homes in the middle of the summer.
