Warning! This article contains major SPOILERS for Thunderbolts*Lewis Pullman’s Bob inexplicably loses his Sentry costume and hair in Thunderbolts*, raising questions about his future MCU appearances. Jake Schreier’s Thunderbolts* introduces one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes in Lewis Pullman’s Robert Reynolds a.k.a. Bob, as well as one of Marvel’s most powerful villains in the form of Bob’s dark counterpart, “the Void”. Unlike most Marvel entries, the Void is defeated through emotional and psychological means in Thunderbolts*‘ heart-wrenching ending, as the тιтular anti-heroes empower Bob to overcome the dark feelings that spawned the enтιтy within his mind.

Sentry’s costume is a tricky one to adapt to live-action. Its bright yellow and dark blue color scheme could easily be too extravagant for such an intimidating character, and its straightforward design doesn’t follow the MCU’s traditional level of detail and texture. Fortunately, Thunderbolts* pulls off an almost identical adaptation of Sentry’s comic book costume, and it goes the extra mile to integrate its bright color into the plot. Thunderbolts* justifies Sentry’s vibrant costume through Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s wish to create a classic-looking superhero who could replace the Avengers.

Robert Reynolds Is The Only Member Of The Thunderbolts Who Loses His Superhero Costume

After the Void takes over Bob’s body, Bob’s consciousness is sent to the deepest of his memories, where he ignores the ever-repeating image of his childhood trauma. Once the Thunderbolts rescue Bob and provide him with the emotional support he needs to overcome the Void, Bob and the Thunderbolts wake up in the middle of the street. Strangely, though, Bob is no longer wearing the Sentry suit Val designed for him, nor is he sporting the dyed hair he got against his will. Instead, Bob is back wearing the blue sweater and dark yellow pants he had inside the Void.

During Thunderbolts*‘ post-credits scene, Bob is the only member of the New Avengers without a new costume, and he reveals he no longer has access to his Sentry or Void powers, as they seem to be closely intertwined. Without his powers, Bob simply hangs out with the New Avengers at the Watchtower and keeps himself busy reading or washing the dishes. The New Avengers know that maintaining a peaceful environment for Bob is for the better, as his dark alter ego could come out again if he insisted on being Sentry.

Thunderbolts* Doesn’t Explain Why Bob’s Sentry Costume And Hair Disappear

In Thunderbolts*, the Void doesn’t harm its victims physically. Instead, it transports them to their own tragic memories. When the Thunderbolts stop the Void, the team and every other person the Void consumes are back where they were at first, completely unscathed. The Thunderbolts retain their costumes, and John Walker even retains his damaged shield. Bob, on the other hand, is still wearing the outfit he had inside the Void, and he wakes up with no memory of what happened while he was there. It’s safe to say that the Void’s effect on Bob was different because he houses the enтιтy, but Thunderbolts* doesn’t really explain why Bob loses his Sentry look.

While Robert Reynolds has repeatedly lost and regained control of his Sentry and Void powers in the comics, losing his costume and hair color isn’t a known effect in the source material. Instead, Bob’s memory loss is much more pronounced, and he forgets he can use his Sentry powers for long periods. When he regains his memories, Robert Reynolds often tries to avoid anything that could reawaken the Void, but he also remains active as Sentry in order to protect Earth from dangerous threats.

Thunderbolts*‘ ending and post-credits scene show how 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday will avoid making the New Avengers overpowered against Doctor Doom. It won’t be as easy as sending Sentry to fight Doctor Doom, as that would risk waking up the Void and creating an even bigger problem for the world. Similarly to how Bruce Banner was unable to transform into the Hulk in Avengers: Infinity War, Bob may not be an active fighter in Avengers: Doomsday.

Whatever the case, the Void is likely to be keeping Bob’s Sentry costume in store for a future battle

However, Avengers: Secret Wars might push Bob to the limit and force him to use his superpowers again. When he finally tries to be Sentry again, the Void might return him his costume, confirming that Sentry and the Void are irreversibly entangled. Sentry might turn the tide against Doctor Doom, but the Void might gain leverage to return, either in Avengers: Secret Wars or a Thunderbolts* spiritual sequel that features the Void as the antagonist once again. Whatever the case, the Void is likely to be keeping Bob’s Sentry costume in store for a future battle.
