I Loved Lewis Pullman’s Sentry, But Marvel’s Original Thunderbolts* Casting Would’ve Made These Bob Lines Even Funnier

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*

Lewis Pullman delivered a stand-out performance as Sentry in Thunderbolts*

, but the original casting would have added some funny moments thanks to the script. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

just introduced a whole team of new heroes ahead of the end of the Multiverse Saga. However, the stand-out addition has to be the incredibly powerful Sentry. And tackling the role, Lewis Pullman perfectly embodies the conflicted hero.

Bob Reynolds had a tragic history ahead of his introduction in Thunderbolts*. He does a great job playing a nervous, shaky, and seemingly weak character. However, when his powers are exposed, it immediately becomes clear that Bob is not to be meddled with, and Sentry’s powers make him one of the most powerful characters to appear in the MCU. Furthermore, as Void, Pullman makes this monstrous figure incredibly terrifying, proving that he was a great choice for the role.

Thunderbolts* Repeatedly Refers To Sentry As Being Invincible, Including By Bob

Sentry Is A Near Invincible Superhero In The MCU

However, Lewis Pullman was not the first choice to play Sentry in Thunderbolts*. Initially, the role was given to Steven Yeun, who was preparing to play the part, before he eventually stepped away from the project and Pullman took his place. This makes for an interesting link, as the character of Sentry is frequently referred to as being “invincible” in the movie. Not only does Valentina Allegra de Fontaine highlight how his limitless powers make him essentially invincible, but Bob also begins to recognize his extensive powers, and begins to refer to himself as being invincible, and a god.

This is evidently a response to Bob being able to withstand being sH๏τ by numerous bullets at close range, falling from a great height, and then taking on a team of elite mercenaries, some of whom possess powers and super-soldier serums, where he walks away completely unscathed. Beyond that, when the kill switch is used to kill Bob after he begins to turn on Valentina, he wakes up as the Void, before the rest of the New Avengers break into his mind, and break him free. All things considered, it certainly seems like Bob is an invincible new hero.

Steven Yeun’s Invincible Role Would’ve Added A Funny Connection To Sentry’s Thunderbolts* Lines

However, the references to his being invincible draw interesting connections between Sentry and another character that Steven Yeun voices, Mark Grayson, aka Invincible, from the Prime Video animated series of the same name. It’s hard to imagine Yeun playing the role, and the iconic Invincible тιтle card smash cut not occuring each time the name is referenced. After three seasons of the show playing out on Prime, this gag is cemented in fans of the series, and it’s integrally connected to Steven Yeun’s voice and character. In this way, if Yeun was playing the role of Sentry in Thunderbolts*, it feels as though those lines of dialogue were inserted intentionally as references to his other super characters.

Whether or not this would actually add to the narrative, or simply feel like a distraction is hard to know for certain, but it would have been an interesting link between disconnected universes that shows how popular superhero stories have become in the last couple of decades. It is likely that Steven Yeun would have done a great job in the role, but Lewis Pullman did a spectacular job as Sentry in Thunderbolts*, and despite the references losing all meaning, his portrayal is perfect for the MCU.
