Alex’s A Minecraft Movie Introduction Was Exciting, But I Was Disappointed By 1 Aspect

One of the most exciting moments of A Minecraft Movie was the reveal of a brand-new character who is likely going to become one of the central focuses of whatever sequel comes out later down the line. That character was Alex, who was revealed during one of A Minecraft Movie‘s post-credits scenes, where it was revealed that she had been living at Steve’s old house while he was staying in the Overworld. It was a fun reveal, even though it wasn’t quite as exciting as it could’ve been.

While there were plenty of other characters in A Minecraft Movie, Jack Black’s Steve and Jason Momoa’s Garrett “Garbage Man” Garrison were the faces of the film. Following Alex’s introduction, she could potentially join them as one of the biggest characters in the franchise. She is a major character from the video game, just like Steve, so her appearance is notable for the series. It’s already been promised that Alex will be a key player in Minecraft 2 after her debut, but the way it’s teased left me slightly disappointed.

Alex Isn’t Really Shown In A Minecraft Movie’s Post-Credits Scene

Alex Is Only Seen From The Back During Her Introduction

Steve and Alex, the default Minecraft skins, running out of a cave surrounded by enemies.

The one detail that made Alex’s A Minecraft Movie reveal less exciting was mostly the fact that she wasn’t really visible at all, only being seen from over the shoulder as Steve spoke to her. Visually, the scene was entirely focused on Jack Black’s Steve, and the film only showed Alex’s orange hair and green shirt from behind, which, to be fair, are part of her iconic look. Alex is a big character for the movie to tease, and not being able to actually show the character off was a bit disappointing.

It wasn’t really an actual introduction, and for people who didn’t know who she was, it didn’t feel like a very exciting tease.

While this was disappointing from a fan’s perspective, as seeing what Alex was going to look like in the franchise going forward would have been great, it also had the unfortunate effect of really undercutting the moment for people who didn’t immediately know who this new character was. It wasn’t really an actual introduction, and for people who didn’t know who she was, it didn’t feel like a very exciting tease. If she was given a full introduction, then it might have driven home how important the character was.

Why A Minecraft Movie Held Back From Fully Introducing Alex

There Are A Couple Potential Reasons She Didn’t Fully Appear

There’s obviously no way to definitely know why this was the way the movie showed the character off, but there are a number of guesses that can be made as to the reasoning behind it. The most obvious one is that there was some sort of scheduling conflict with Alex’s actor in A Minecraft Movie, Kate McKinnon, causing her to be unable to actually appear on set when they needed to shoot her scene. This would explain the strange introduction, as they would have just used a stand-in actor for the body and dub McKinnon voice.

One of McKinnon’s upcoming films, In the Blink of an Eye, was filming at a similar time as A Minecraft Movie in early 2024, and was potentially the reason she couldn’t appear in the film.

Another possibility is that the filmmakers still weren’t 100% sure about Alex’s design, and wanted to wait until they began work on the second movie to figure out exactly how she was going to look. The basics are already there, with the clothes and hair being major references to the Minecraft video game, but there are plenty of specifics about her design that need to be decided on. If they had doubts about exactly what Alex was going to look like, then it would make sense for them to wait until they could develop her look further for the sequel.

A Minecraft Movie’s Credits Scene Still Did Its Job For Alex

The Scene Still Did What It Needed To Do

The moment could have been more exciting if the movie showed off her design and how McKinnon would look in the role. But, it was still a fun surprise and is clearly getting people excited about the future of the franchise. Alex will be revealed in full down the line, and simply knowing that was enough for the post-credits scene to feel worth it, even if it could have been improved. There are a ton of ways that A Minecraft Movie‘s sequel could go with the character, making it very exciting to speculate on how she will be handled.
