Mark Hamill Wants Sebastian Stan As The New Luke Skywalker

John Nania, Sebastian Stan’s stunt double, has revealed Mark Hamill wants Stan as a recast Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. Lucasfilm has always been wary of recasting characters, blaming the Han Solo recast on Solo: A Star Wars Story‘s box office failure. The debate on recasting legacy characters has recently resurfaced, though, after Andor recast the character of Bail Organa due to original actor Jimmy Smits not being available.

Now, Sebastian Stan stunt double John Nania has told Cantina Talk that Mark Hamill himself supports a popular recast – that Stan would be a great young Luke Skywalker. Hamill has discussed the idea with Stan, and he apparently loves the idea; Stan himself is wary of taking over while the classic actor is still in role. As Nania explained when asked about the idea of this recast:

“Do you know how many conversations he and I have had about this? Literally there was a moment that I’m, like, I’m sure you’ve seen the picture of you as Luke Skywalker. He then told me… Mark and I have actually talked about this. Not anything official on Disney’s level of Star Wars, but I guess Mark Hamill’s been, like, he’s a fantastic actor, let him do it. But then Sebastian being as awesome as he is, he’s like, Mark is still doing the job. I don’t wanna take the job from him and he’s still working, you’re not gonna beat the original.

But then this other side to it is, like, they’re not calling. I hear it, I’d love to do it.”

Sebastian Stan Really Would Be The Perfect Luke Skywalker

It’s no surprise to hear Nania has talked about this with Stan; this recast has been a popular one for years. What is exciting, though, is to hear that Hamill is in favor. Hamill has supported a Luke Skywalker recast in the past, despite returning twice in The Mandalorian season 2 and The Book of Boba Fett through some incredibly sophisticated CGI technology. Two years ago now, Hamill insisted he wasn’t needed as Luke Skywalker anymore, hinting he feels the franchise needs to move on.

The problem, of course, is that Star Wars hops around the timeline with impunity. The next movie is set just five years after Return of the Jedi; the idea of galaxy-spanning adventures not featuring Han, Luke, and Leia just feels odd. Luke could easily be written as busy rebuilding the Jedi Order, but a Princess Leia recast is surely needed; this was supposed to be the height of Leia’s political career, and her presence was explicitly referenced in Ahsoka season 2, which feels like setup.

Our Take On Sebastian Stan As Luke Skywalker

Lucasfilm’s reluctance to recast legacy characters has, frankly, been a source of intense frustration. The deepfake CGI technology used to recreate Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett was impressive, but frankly, it felt like it did a disservice to the character, and there was still something of an uncanny valley effect. Lucasfilm is wrong to blame a recast for Solo‘s box office performance, too; there were so many other issues with that movie.

It doesn’t sound as though a recast is in the works at this time; Nania seems to believe Lucasfilm isn’t calling. That’s a shame, but to be fair, Stan is going to be pretty busy for a while now. Avengers: Doomsday has begun filming, which means he probably won’t have time for Star Wars. Still, we can only hope Lucasfilm make that call soon.
